The central focus of this pride both in and out of character is the ever-changing system of houses. There are always nine houses who, at any given time, represent the strongest families in the pride. Not every member of a house has to be related; many times Houses will adopt outsiders into it based on skill, merit, or loyalty. There is a mutual benefit in adopting outsiders into a house; villagers will be afforded better protection from the darkness due to each house being given their own cavern and, additionally, will have access to their house resources. For a House, the more members they have, the more prolific they are likely to be which will ultimately help secure their place.

Houses benefit the most by specializing in a single craft - this affords them the opportunity to pass their knowledge among their house members and become masters. However, it is not required that every house member has the same rank or skill set.

Houses do not get to be houses forever if they become weak or stop producing; twice a year (in February and August) the weakest house will be calculated by the points accumulated over the last six months. That means two houses throughout the year will be designated as the 'weak links' and will have to compete in the Sérstakt Leikir in December to maintain their place as a House (the only exception is if one of the formerly weak houses has the most points at the start of the Sérstakt Leikir).

Likewise, there will be a champion house elected every six months (in February and August). The champion house is the one with the most points for that six month period and they will be afforded an extra breeding period the month after their election (see the breeding post).

Points are reset after the six month period.

The Point System
There are TWO point systems - one for specialists and one for warriors. Points are calculated on a per month basis and require a completed roleplay or solo for your character to earn their points for that month. The month that your RP is finished is the month your points will be counted towards regardless of when the RP was started. Finished RP requirements follow breeding requirements.

Specialists (Fishers, Farmers, Crafters and Herbalists)
The points that a specialist earns every month are translated as the excess of goods they have left over from their job after they have supplied what is needed to their House.

    • To calculate your points for the month, randomize a number between 1 & 5. If your character is employed in their House's main specialization (ie: Crafters in Heidr or Fishers in Dido), you may randomize a number between 2 & 5.

    • If you finish your point requirements two months in a row, you may double your points. Think of this as a multiplier bonus that may not exceed x2; if you miss a month, you will go back to regular points for the first month you complete. This multiplier will always reset in February and August.

Warriors (Champions, Jarls, Leifs, Bears, Wolfs, and Boars)
The warriors will earn points for their house through duels.

    • For an RP between two lions, randomize a number between 1 & 5. The warrior with the least points will keep their roll for points. The warrior with the most points will DOUBLE their roll for points. (So a loser that rolls 3 will contribute 3 to their house points but a winner that rolls 4 will contribute 8 to their house points).

    • Solo RPs are allowed between your warrior and an NPC but you will only earn a flat 2 points, no more or less. You may NOT solo between two warriors of different houses if you own both.

    • If you character's house specialization is fighting/warriors (such as Nysno), you may add one point to your final total.

    • You may do up to three duels per month to count towards your point total.

Merchants, Maze Keepers, and Maze Runners
These characters earn points just for being good at their jobs but because there is little way to measure this and because it's a limited rank, they have a little less flair.

  • As long as the characters in these ranks complete one RP a month they will add a flat +3 points to their house. There's really no other way to calculate this so they will just always be an easy average.

  • If you finish your point requirements two months in a row, you may double your points. Think of this as a multiplier bonus that may not exceed x2; if you miss a month, you will go back to regular points for the first month you complete. This multiplier will always reset in February and August.

Please Note: We reserve the right to alter this system if we believe it needs to be balanced but we will only do so after a calculation period has ended (February or August)

Random Events
To add some flair to point gathering, we will randomize an event every month that may boost or cripple certain crafts (a fish population boom, a drought that affects herbs, constant rain that impedes warriors but helps herbs grow). This is both to give the point system some flair and give people RP opportunities. The details of each event will be explained as they happen.

Family name: Nysnö (Means; Snow).
Animal: Owl.
Location: Bleikr Mountain (Base)

Main God of Worship: Divination.
Family Words: We Will Endure.
Specialization: Fighting (all ranks in the warrior class)

Family Summary: The Nysnö are one of the eldest families to keep a hold of power; ruled over by Eir as Jarl and her brother Iver as active champion. The house is based at the foot of Bleikr and has a reputation for being one of the most religious houses; as their domain is literally the (foundation) of the mountain, a fact that the house takes great pride in. Made up of strong, hardened warriors, it is a house that favors the military over other professions. To those outside the house they seem strict, cold and resolute. However, as an insider it is harder to find an group of creatures that are so loyal and supportive, holding this name symbolizes more than a house but a family, one that would lay down their lives for one another if needs be. Polyamory is something openly practiced by the Jarl, and is very common within the House itself.

Short History: Thunn, the old Jarl, recently passed; leaving the title of Jarl to his eldest son Iver. However, the young male was challenged by his half-sister Eir shortly after his father's death. The resulting battle left Eir in charge of the family. When Eir accepted her new title she explained that, Iver, though raised for the specific purpose of leading the Pride, was not fit to rule. Nysnö had always been a warrior House, and to rule it one must have battle in their blood; it is why the God’s favored her over him.

Family name: Dáinn (previously House of Krysin)
Animal: Antelope
Location: Farmlands

Main God of Worship: Pahala (pending authority)
Family Words: Prosperity in Heart
Specialization: Stadfestr (Farmers)

Family Summary: The family has found its fortune in overseeing the herds that roam the Farmlands. Claiming a large portion of the territory, they've been able to sell their kills to the Dido family while sending their pelts out to the Heidr family for crafting. This system of trade has been in place for as long as the family can remember, though only now has it been utilized to its fullest capabilities. Where once the family had been secluded, they are now one of the most open and welcoming houses within the pride. It is common to greet one another with gifts and offer overwhelming hospitality to visitors.

Short History: The Dáinn is a house that in recent times has undergone a sort of revolution, though not one of a warlike nature. A cultural revolution has happened in response to backlash over the family's predicament. Once a family that tightly guarded its riches, it pushed itself so far into seclusion that it nearly collapsed. The Jarl's bloodline dwindled to only one individual remaining within the pride, bringing about paranoia and skepticism over the future. What children and family he had left to the roguelands, chased away by the Jarl's borderline crazy actions and attitude. Only by chance did Kataa'dua stumble upon Skiringssal with his heritage clear upon his sleeve. Tracing the bloodlines back, Kataa was officially recognized as Leif and eventually became Jarl.

Family name: Heiðr (previously Gullveig)
Animal: Salamander
Location: Base of Mount Bleikr

Main God of Worship: Rebirth
Family Words: Rise from the Ashes.
Specialization: Skinnr (Crafters)

Family Summary: Though the Heidr are a relatively young house, their roots trace back to one of the oldest houses in the lands of the Skiringssal. Formerly known as Gullveig, they worshipped the Goddess of Fire and made their fortune on the back of their inspiration and bartering skills. Re-forged and reborn as the Heidr, they now worship the Goddess of Rebirth but follow in the footsteps of their forefathers; the Heidr boast some of the most talented crafters in the pride and sport a wide range of goods that include pelts, accessories, and (purportedly) magical runes (as long as you know who to ask). The lower ranked members of the family often commit to hunting or gathering but they do also have merchants with a knack for bartering and deal making - without free trade they would be starved of resources for their crafts.

Short History: After the collapse of the Gullveig, many members of their family scattered to any house that would take them, but the Jarl (now disgraced and humiliated) left the pride to join the Skadi with two of his loyal sons in tow. After his death in the wilderness, the eldest son of the Jarl prayed to the gods for weeks that they might bring him an answer. At last, the Goddess of Rebirth showed herself to him and bade him meet her for three nights in a field of wildflowers - after the third night, she disappeared, only to return with two children in tow many moons later. She promised that when these children grew, they would bring glory to the house of Gullveig once more. True to her word, Eamonn and Mairead joined the Skiringssal as adults and won a place for their family among the noble houses. They named it Heidr, after their mother, and look to her for guidance.

Family name: Níðhǫggr ('Malice Striker,' the dragon/serpent who gnaws at the root of the world tree) (Commonly referred to as Nidhogg)
Animal: Snake
Location: Caves within the base of Bleikr Mountain

Main God of Worship: Tbd
Family Words: We are Fire
Specialization: TBD

Family Summary: House Níðhǫggr is an old but controversial family that has come in and out of notability with time. While time has brought change to the family, there are a few strands that have remained constant. One of these is the family's 'profession.' As opposed to a traditional trade, House Nidhogg takes particular pride in its lions and its social affairs. The family contains talented singers, dancers, and storytellers, opening its arms to those talented in the performing arts. Even lions that have simply a pretty pelt or silver tongue can find a home here, for House Nidhogg boasts that it can provide company and entertainment that can overshadow any simple physical object.

The family's fondness towards the beautiful is a notable trait. Its Jarls have been known to keep his treasures (most notably, lions which seem the most valuable in their talents) close to his heart, this group of favorites often referred to as the dragon's hoard. He has a deep love for those he considers precious: his favorite performers, some sparkly treasures, and it Is rumored that even sneaky spies have eyes and ears under the Jarl's employ.

Short History: The rumor that the Jarls of House Nidhogg have greedy hearts and eyes for anything pretty is longstanding and comes with more than just a grain of truth. The house name is an old one and has always been associated with carefully curated performers. In somewhat recent history, however, the family was struck down by their Jarl's greed.

Generations back Smaug's grandfather Glaurung held the mantle of Jarl. A relatively successful Jarl in his young age and preceded by a chain of similarly successful predecessors, his heart grew hungry for fame and glory beyond the current domain of his house. He tried to expand the family's successes to other professions, attempting to undermine other families and take over their specialties. This endeavor was a swift failure as the family's resources were stretched far too thin and House Nidhogg fell out of favor soon after.

It was a slow and arduous process for the Glaurung's son (and Smaug after that) to bring standing back to the family. Smaug is still a relatively young Jarl and, though the lessons of his grandfather's greed may have a home somewhere in his mind, the sometimes arrogant dragon's penchant for greed lingers in his heart.

Family name: Mìmir (Old Norse "The rememberer, the wise one" )
Animal: Raven
Location: A cave system in the mountains surrounding the valley where most of the pride lives, giving them an excellent vantage point to keep tabs on/observe the land below.

Main God of Worship: Wisdom (no permission needed, since she's mine)
Family Words: "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake."
Specialization: TBD

Family Summary: An old family, and one in which becoming Jarl is not contingent on being the eldest son. To the contrary, any children of the current jarl (male or female) are eligible to put themselves forward when the opportunity arises, so long as they are able to impress the Vegr, and the family's Berserkir as to their eligibility - so political machinations often play a part, and challenges often include a battle of wits, overseen by the Norn.

They are a family of tacticians & intellectuals. Battle prowess is respected (and worked at!), certainly (without the strength to defend one's vision, after all, all the brains in the world can't carry you through), but they subscribe to the belief that battles are most often won by intelligence and planning. In their eyes, any goal one sets out to achieve is a battle of sorts, and they approach it accordingly.

They revere wit and creativity, but don't discount the value of study, either. After all, good intelligence of an opponent can help in forcing them into a hasty decision, and swiftly turn defeat into victory. Games of strategy and planning are an intricate part of daily life, and one's abilities in that sphere are more respected than brute strength alone. (Ideally, if this house got picked, they'd be the kind willing to pay for...information, especially of the variety that might give them an edge).

Legend has it that the first jarl of their house had met the goddess of wisdom (in a past incarnation, since her current is too young to have done so...not that they know this), and so impressed her that she bestowed the gift of her own wisdom upon him, a gift that allowed him to lead his house into unforeseen prestige, and leaving the house with a veneration for wisdom and learning that has not abated, convinced that it will see them through any trials that may come.

Short History: While they are an old family, the line was almost broken after the death of the previous jarl, who had never married. He left behind one b*****d son, born to a rogue lioness outside of the pride and only recently recognized as legitimate, as his heir. His unexpected passing (he had been quite young, and unfortunately got caught in a freak rockslide) meant that Eldur, only recently introduced to the pride at large, had to step into a role that he never expected to fill, especially not so soon.

While some were not thrilled at his promotion, with no other eligible candidates, most reluctantly gave their support after he proved his wits sharp enough to impress their current Vegr, and the family's Berserkir. He's a moderately strong seer, but more of the "Can't put my paw on it" type, and so doesn't realize that these are anything but sharp instincts, paired with a quick mind and a keen sense of observation (which is likely why he's been overlooked in regards to being tapped to be a Frodleikr on Mount Bleikr).

Family name: Vita (be aware of/find out)
Animal: Badgers
Location: Closest to the Maze, including a section of the valley wall/cave where they paint.

Main God of Worship: Labyrinths
Family Words: We were, we are, we will be
Specialization: TBD

Family Summary: The Vita house prides itself with finding the answers they seek. In a maze of history, they are the ones who record it. The means of their record is paintings on the walls. Their paintings depict fights one, Jarl’s crowned, the rise and fall of the different houses and much more.

They do this in an attempt to remain unbiased, though depending on the current Jarl of the Vita house it can sometimes become strewed.

The house prizes those with tattoo markings and/or gold like strands in their mane/tail to honor their patron god. When someone joins the house either through marriage or other means, they will receive a simple tattoo (usually a band around a leg) and/or will have a strand of gold weaved through their mane/tail tuff.

Short History: Though they track the history of all the houses, Vita is especially proud of their own. Before becoming one of the nine houses, the Vita family were known to be excellent painters. Once becoming one of the nine families they made it their duty to paint murals of all the major events that happen in the pride.

For the most part the Vita house remained unbiased with their history. That changed drastically when Skálpr Vita became the Jarl. From the moment he won a duel against his brother for right to become the Jarl, he changed the facts to make himself look superior to others.

Skálpr Vita raised his heir to follow in his steps. A fact that some members of the house did not approve of. To change the way the house was headed, Nordlys, a b*****d offspring of Skálpr, made it her mission to replace her half-brother and become heir so she could return house Vita to its former ways.

To do so she had to not only prove herself to her father, but put on a rouse that she was going to rule similarly to him. After her efforts and he father’s ailing health, Skálpr Vita legitimized her and appointed her heir.
Once her father died, Nordlys Vita became Jarl. She vowed to keep the records fair and unbiased.
