Thread was destined to fall over the Western Continent. The Weyr was busy preparing, and there was a heaviness in the air. Everybody acted differently during Threadfall days. Riders and weyrfolk alike knew that this Fall might be the one a lover or friend didn't return from; this might be the Fall where lives were lost, and even if they survived, injury was likely in some fashion.

Today was the day Vimiath's latest clutch would face the enemy for the first time. Liat and Orioth had prepared them for this as best they could, but they understood that all the drilling, all the lecturing, all the practicing would never be enough for this moment. The clutch had made it through their Between lessons, but she did not know how they might fair during their first Threadfall. It was often a rough transition, even if they were flying in relatively lighter conditions. There would always be risks, and firestone delivery would put them more at risk.

But this is what being a dragonrider was all about. Impression, training, drilling.... It all came to this moment. Would Sparks Rising Wing return in tact? Or would there be a keening of dragons mourning their loss? Part of the woman didn't want to think about it, and yet, it was something she had to think of every day. Every action, every drill, every lesson, every meeting was thinking about the weyrlings and what might benefit them. What did she and her assistants need to plan so they had an advantage? So they might survive, not just weyrling training, but the entire Pass? Everything she did was for their benefit, and today, they would be tested

It's time, Orioth.

The blue dragon gave an uneasy rumble, but reached out to all the Sparks Rising weyrlings. Sparks, it's time. Assemble in V formation out in the Weyrbowl. The time to fight draws near.

It didn't take long for the weyrlings to assemble. Liat was proud of how they had grown over the last Turn, and many of them were already full-grown. They were a large and healthy clutch, and she let her eyes drink in each and every one as she walked through their ranks. Though she kept an eye out for anything that looked out of place, she was pleased to see that they all looked to be in fighting form. This might be the last time she saw some of them, but she hoped to Faranth that would not be the case.

"We'll be going up shortly. Thread is falling over the western half of the continent today. There are lots of farmers, beastcrafters, and woodcrafters counting on us today to protect their crop and animals, not to mention all the holds. That said, this is an eight hour Threadfall, and we'll be counting on you to serve four hours of fighting today. Bronzes and browns, you'll be in it the full duration. Blues, greens, and whites, you'll be expected to serve two hours based on rotation. Whites, we're flying low enough altitude your dragons should be able to manage the two hours, but if they need a break or their stamina isn't up for it, let us know, and we will either send you to the Queen's Wing or back to the Weyr. Do not push them." On this, Liat was very clear.

Whites were just as capable when it came to fighting Thread as any dragon, but their stamina could suffer, particularly the more delicate and smaller the white. They were capable, but it was also up to their riders to ensure they kept tabs on their health. Threadfighting took a lot more work than simply flying or flaming, and even larger dragons could find their stamina waning.

"Today, you'll finally meet the Enemy. This is what Impression is all about. This is what it means to wear those knots on your shoulders. You have all made it this far, and Orioth and I are exceedingly proud of you. No matter what happens, no matter who comes back, and who doesn't, you are all dragonriders of Pern. Pern would not be here without your sacrifice." Each of them had given their time, sweat, blood, and tears. Impression was beautiful, but it came at a high cost. Not only were they taken from their families and friends, but careers and other dreams were put on hold, and in some cases, in many cases, death was the final outcome. Pern needed them, and today, they would take their first step in a much bloodier world.

"Wind conditions are favorable, but there are reports of some strong gusts even in the lower wings. We'll be staring in V formation but that will change as the conditions do. I'll lead the first group up, along with the first wave of blues, greens, and whites. J'cheyn and green Savaceth will lead the second wave.

"You have all been prepared for this. If something goes wrong, tell Orioth or Savaceth. If something doesn't feel right, tell Orioth or Savaceth. Above all else, don't push your dragons! If they are struggling, if something is hurting, or anything else seems amiss do not let pride get in the way! Let us know! Communication is vital and I trust you to let us know.

"D'mar and Strigonth Front and center. You'll be on point the first hour as acting Wingsecond. Don't worry about making any calls--if Orioth and I need something from you, we'll let you know. The rest of the wing will fan out behind you as practiced. Now, mount up! Those in Wave 2, sit tight, and be prepared for a seamless changeover."

Once the dragons were all in place, Liat and Orioth gave the signal. As one, the dragons lifted off from the Bowl, and once they were at altitude, they disappeared to join the fray.

Welcome to the Spooky's Clutch First Threadfall!
It's time for all that training to come full-circle! This is the first time the Spooky Weyrlings will be facing Threadfall, and even though they're fighting at a lower altitude, it is still terribly dangerous.

Weyrlings will be fighting between the Low Altitude Wing and the Queen's Wing, helping to sweep up any missed Thread from the higher wings, and to serve carrying Threadstone to the rest of the Wings. It's a dangerous position as they could get a call from any wing in any altitude, and that puts them at risk for scoring.

No XP is given out during this game. It's not an official Threadfall, but it is fun practice, and goo for IC drama and fulfillment!

How to Play
This is a dice game, along with some prompts on how your weyrling is doing. Your weyrlings will get HP to track. If a weyrling reaches 0 HP, and there is no save, they will fall from the sky and be KO'd for the rest of the game. One of the gold's will save them and return them to weyr but the game will be over. 0 HP may also result in death, but as we're an entire PC clutch, that choice is yours to make and cannot be undone.

The grids are all D6! You may be asked to roll 1-2 or 1-4 for certain extra actions! Those prompted rolls do not count towards your daily total

The Stats
Golds: 18 HP
Bronzes: 16 HP
Browns: 14 HP
Blues: 12 HP
Green: 10 HP
Whites: 8 HP

0 HP will result in the weyrling falling from the sky, only to be caught by gold Sheyoth , Neliath, or one of the other queens, and being KO'd. They will be out the rest of the game. 0 HP may also result in death if the player chooses.

The Rules
  • Each weyrling may roll up to 3 times a day, totalling 6 rolls per Round.
  • Each Round will last 2 days. Uta will announce when the new Round begins.
  • Whites, greens, and blues will roll for 2 Rounds of their choice. Either the first 2, or the last 2. Uta will announce when the First Wave switches with the Second Wave.
  • Browns and bronzes will roll for all 4.
  • When you roll you must choose a grid for that roll. You must call it out ahead of time when you roll, and then edit the response into your post. For the most part, you can choose a grid. Even a shy blue could roll from the ambitious grid if they're feeling emboldened; or a typically flashy brown or bronze might feel like toning it down. It's all in good fun! The only grid that's limited is the Wingsecond Grid, which Wingseconds can roll from as an additional roll per day.
  • You may not change the grid because you don't like the result.
  • You may not roll again until you edit in your response. This is an RP game, so RP is required.
  • Saves can be kept and are cumulative, but only as long as the Round lasts. Once a new Round is posted, any unused Saves will be lost.
  • If you take Damage, you may pause in your rolls if you wish to see if someone can save your character! Once you roll a new post, any previous damage cannot be saved.
  • There is a grid that does not allow for saves, even from a Wingsecond roll, so please be aware some saves just aren't possible.
  • Going back to the Weyr to get healing will result in an extra 2 HP for every roll you sacrifice. You MUST at least fill in a post for you roll showing your dragon and rider are getting healing to obtain the HP. This means 6 HP per forfeited day or 12 HP per round.

General Grid
This is just a general grid. Not weighted in any particular direction! Some good, some bad, some inbetween!
General Grid

1. You appear from Between..... directly into a clump of Thread. It sears through your dragons wingsails, and you can feel it tangling up on your leg! The wherhide fabric doesn't seem to offer any protection at all, shaffit all! You finally remember to visualize and go Between, but you're certainly hurting. -5 HP Threadscore.

2. Your dragon swoops down to flame a writhing silvery Thread, but your riding straps are just a little bit loose. The sudden fear of feeling yourself lift just a bit higher in the straps than you like is terrifying as you fear you might slide off. Furthermore, when your dragon swoops back up to return to formation, you're forcefully returned to your seat! You're able to tighten the leg strap with shaky hands, and were never at risk of actually falling off, but it's not an experience you want to feel again. Your tailbone is going to object for a few days. -1 HP Rider Damage.

3. Your dragon spots a silver strand of Thread. You visualize the space you need to go to flame it, but don't take into account the wind, or your dragon's flight speed. Instead, you appear Between but have completely overshot your airspace and are now out in the open, exposed, and with no Thread anywhere near you. Shaffit all! Don't you look the fool. Whoops.

4. No Thread is near you, and there's nothing really to be done. The winds are calm and you're in good spirits. You've got this. A moment to think, a moment to breathe. Look at you, fighting Thread like a real rider!

5. It's a classic textbook maneuver. An ugly strand of Thread is falling down, drifting, blowing, squirming on the wind. If it stays course it will put it right in your airspace. Your dragon shifts position, veers, and manages to catch the tangle with a belch of flame. Nothing to this Thread thing, nope!

6. As you're flying, you notice one of your wingmates in trouble! You call out to them, to try to warn them, and hopefully avoid witnessing a catastrophe. Save! Remove all damage from a single roll for this Round!

Scared/Nervous/Please-don't-let-me-Die Grid
Are you a nervous dragon? Are you feeling particularly conservative in your Thread-fighting tactics? Do you want to be extra-careful? Then this is the grid for you!
Conservative Grid

1. Oh! Oh no! Someone got hurt! Your dragon seems particularly upset by this knowledge, and sends a flare of concern through the link. So distressed by their worry, and so determined to calm them, your dragon completely misses flaming some Thread that could have easily been caught. Whoops! If this is your 3rd time rolling this in the game, you are unlucky and get hit with the Thread instead. -4 HP from Threadscore! The counter is also reset.

2. There's a heavy clump of Thread heading your way. Your dragon has been worried about this clump for some time now, and sure enough it's coming directly your way. Thankfully, your dragon is prepared, and they're able to flame it down, turning it to harmless ash. Good job!

3. The stress is on! Your not really taking any risks, which you think has been a good thing. Unfortunately, you're also not sure if you're letting Threadfall through that should have been swept up by you. Are you doing this right? Will you get in trouble later? You find yourself starting to wonder and doubt about your Threadfighting skills. There's another call for firestone, but you hesitate, and one of your fellows goes up instead, leaving you to wait for another opportunity.

4. It's inevitable. Eventually you're called on to make an emergency delivery of Firestone. The flight up there wasn't bad, but it's windy. Roll a D4
  1. If you're a white, green, or blue, your dragon is blown by a gust of wind just as go to make the throw! How humiliating! Even worse, you wind up pulling a muscle in your back by the time you manage to successfully make another throw. -2 HP! f you're a brown or bronze, your dragon has to fight against the gust, but the throw is successful!

  2. You actually miss the mark. You either overthrow right over the riders head, or under throw and it doesn't much make it. Shaffit! That's precious stone lost! You eventually make the toss, but are still feeling poorly about it!

  3. You successfully deliver the stone to the rider and dragon! Now to get back to the weyrling wing!

  4. There's a lot more Thread in the higher altitude wings! If you're a white, green, or blue, your smaller size is your advantage. You are able to avoid getting struck by Thread, weaving out of the way, and even manage to flame down a clump that's dangerously close to the rider pair. Good job! They'll remember you, for sure. If you're a brown or bronze, you aren't able to get out of the way, causing the rider pair to try to save you! They take care of the worst of it, but you wind up with an ashburn, as you forgot to keep into account the direction of the wind. -3 HP!

5. Your dragon spots a clump of Thread. You hop Between, but take a conservative jump. Your concerns are valid, as the wind changes direction abruptly! Had you been any closer, you would be right in the midst of the clump. Instead, you're able to flame it down without damage. Woot!

6. You're gong to make sure your dragon doesn't run out of firestone. You keep feeding your dragon the precious stone, even when they're not asking for it. Unfortunately, your dragon winds up biting his or her tongue bad! Ouch! Furthermore, they're feeling very bloated and a little ill.... That's probably not good. Maybe you should hold off... -1 HP and your next roll must be from the Bad Luck Grid!

Gung-Ho/Careless/Wilder Grid
If your dragon is really feeling this Threadfighting thing, or maybe just wants to show off and draw the eye, then this is the grid for them!

Ambitious Grid

1. In your dragon's haste to get Thread, you completely overshoot the target. Your dragon's tail and foot get caught in the tendrils, forcing you to blink Between. Ouch! -2 HP

2. Your dragon spots a clump of Thread just barely out of their wingspace. Well, what's the harm in that! You veers towards it in a hurry and belch out flame, certain of victory.... Unfortunately, it was at the same time your neighboringweyrling was diving for it, too! You cry out warning, but wind up flaming them instead! Ouch! Quote a fellow weyrling to take Flame damage. -5 HP!

3. There's a large tangle of Thread heading right for your wingmate! While some bellow warning, your dragon isn't going to sit back. Instead, a quick maneuver means they're successfully able to save their fellow weyrling! Save one of your wingmates from damage!

4. There's a moment of quiet and it's making you impatient. You want to fight, fight, fight! Sitting around doing nothing is no fun.... Where's the action? This Threadfall is a piece of cake!

5. You're called up to deliver Firestone to one of the Fighting Wings. Roll a D4 to see how you fare!
  1. You're certain that you'll manage without issue. Your ego is justified as you fly up to the needy party and successfully toss them a sack of stone. Your dragon even manages a cool little barrel roll on their way back down. No damage, all awesome, booyah.

  2. On your way up, you can't help but show off a little. You flame a strand of Thread you didn't need to catch, and wind up burning yourself as you fly right through the ash cloud. Whoops. -1 HP You successfully deliver the stone, but are a little worse for wear.

  3. You casually toss the stone, only to find you missed your mark completely! The rider is unable to catch it, and both watch in dismay as it falls down below. Shaffit! How embarrassing. You're more focused on your next attempt, which does land its mark.

  4. The throw was a little too strong, but the wingrider manages to successfully catch it. It's just a matter of practice. You've got this!

6. Your dragon tries to catch three patches of Thread that have fallen close to your wingspace. They could have gotten one or two, but not all three. In their haste, twisting and turning, they wind up pulling a muscle in their wing, and two of the three clumps aren't fully charred. Sloppy work, pal. -1 HP and your next roll must be from the Bad Luck Grid

Not-Feeling-So-Hot/Ow-ow-ow/Distracted Flying/Back Luck Grid
Feeling a bit worn out? Already hurting? Not feeling quite up to snuff today?
This grid is for riders who might be injured or not feeling excellent, or who just are off their game. You can choose to roll from this grid, or, when forced to do so from another roll, you may go back to a different grid after you roll from this one!

Bad Luck Grid

1. It is just not your day...or is it? You jump Between to avoid getting scored and wind up appearing in your wingmates airspace Roll a D4 to see what happens!
  1. You manage to startle the weyrling and they dive out of the way. Thankfully, this causes them to avoid getting hit by a clump of Thread. It wasn't your finest moment, but you did some good. Maybe that counts for something, right? Quote a Weyrling and save them from damage for a roll!

  2. You startle your fellow weyrling so badly they swerve out of formation in surprise -- right into the silver menace! Quote a weyrling and have them take 4 HP damage!

  3. Your fellow weyrling was just about to flame the clump of Thread you avoided. They wind up flaming you instead! Quote a weyrling so they know they flamed you. << You take 4 HP damage!

  4. You surprise your fellow weyrling, but a quick honk of greeting, and you're already back in place. No harm, no foul... just not your best moment.

2. There's a patch of Thread that has your name on it. You dive towards it, and aim to flame it down. Unfortunately, youvweren't paying any mind to the direction the wind was blowing! If white, green, or blue, you are successfully able to weave out of the way. If this is your third time or more rolling this as a white, green, or blue, you run out of luck and fly right into the ash cloud and remaining Thread. -4 HP If brown or bronze you're not able to get out of the way. Not only do you hit the remains of Thread, but the burning ash, and char. -4 HP

3. You're already feeling awful and now you're called up for Firestone duty. For Faranth's sake... On your way to the rider in question, you wind up getting blown into a tangle of Thread. The stronger winds caught your young dragon off guard, and you find yourself taking a heavy hit. You are able to jump Between but that didn't feel good at all. You throw the stone, albeit a bit shakily, but at least its mark is true. -4 HP

4. You didn't realize it, but your firestone sack has somehow ripped! You're all out of stone and have to return to the Weyr to pick up another sack. Tick tock, time's a wasting! Hurry on back! Lose your next roll.

5. You're just not feeling good. You're tired, you're sweaty, you're stressed, you're upset, your dragon is hurting.... but the show must go on. Thread isn't over, and though you're dragging, you know you have to keep up the fight. Welcome to the rest of your life. There is nothing glorious about this fight.

6. Everything. Hurts. Your dragon is in pain, you're in pain, and you're exhausted -- physically and emotionally. Nothing seems to be going right, and everything seems to be going wrong. Ah, but the day is not yet done, and the story is not over... No, depsite your pain, you find a new wave of hope, or at least determination. You will not let the Enemy win! In fact, you see where a wingmate is in trouble, and are able to call out to them in warning--or might even be able to save them with a burst of flame and speed! You earn a save! Quote a fellow weyrling to remove one damage roll from this round.

Roulette Grid
Do you feel lucky? This is a grid that does NOT allow for saves! You take what you get and hopefully don't roll a 5. Sometimes life just isn't fair, after all.
Roulette Grid

1. You successfully deliver firestone to a rider and dragonpair. The pair seems grateful, and even manages to give you a salute before you leave. Nice! Clearly, you're doin' it right.

2. Do you feel lucky? Yes you are! Free space. Write whatever you want, but all is well. Go, go, go!

3. Not much going on. You get a moment to breathe and collect your thoughts. Threadfall isn't always all chaos and pain. Sometimes, you're just sitting there with your thoughts, and you start thinking about... How tight riding pants actually are. You don't know where the thought came from, but suddenly, you're thinking of a fellow weyrling in new ways. Woah. Better get your head in the game!

4. A sudden gust blows and threatens to push you out of formation. If white, green, or blue you aren't able to compensate. Instead, you're blown directly into the flight space of one of your fellows and get burned by their flame! -3HP from flame damage! Damage cannot be saved! If you're a brown or bronze, you are able to fight against the gust, and keep in formation as planned. Sometimes size does matter.

5. Something goes wrong. One moment you were busy diving for a strand of Thread, the next you find yourself blown into a large clump!. There is no time for warning, no time for anyone to intervene. No time to call out, no time to blink Between. The Thread is on you, eating you, eating at your dragon, even as you hear them shriek in pain. There's no time to visualize the Weyr when all you feel is the agony of your dragon, as well as the burning pain of Threadscore. Automatic KO. Major Damage. Automatic 0 HP. Your dragon will fall but be caught by one of the queens.

6. If white, green, or blue, your dragon winds up making a very impressive aeriel display. They veer out of the way of a tangle of Thread, but are able to whirl on wingtip and shoot it down before it gets past them. That's some fancy flying there! If you're brown or bronze, your big, fat, lumbering form is too slow. Your dragon tries to veer, but instead takes a hit! -3 HP that cannot be saved. That's going to leave an ugly mark!

Wingsecond Grid
Congratulations on being a wannabe leader. You get an extra roll a day during any given round. (So up to 2 rolls per round.) Your character will get to be a Wingsecond for one Round Only. So make sure your role before the Round is up!
Wingsecond Grid

1. You choke. You don't know what happened. You were asked to give a signal to change formation, but suddenly can't remember it. You find yourself flying out of formation too high, too low, too close, and have to have Liat and Orioth order you back in. Nothing is going right, and your frustration is rising. Is this too much pressure or just a bad day? You're in such a bad state of it that you wind up flying directly into your fellow weyrlings line of fire and get burnt. This isn't good... Quote a weyrling to let them know what happened and take -5 HP

2. You thought things were going well. You're here, you've been drilling for this, and you know what you're supposed to do. With your fellow weyrling flying behind you, and the Weyrlingmaster just ahead, you know that this is your time to shine. Unfortunately, maybe it's just a bit too much pressure. Suddenly, it all becomes real. One bad call, and it's on you. One moments hesitation and it's on your head! You must make a split decision -- your two neighboring weyrlings are coming right into catastrophe with Thread. You cry out, but your dragon can literally only save one! Who do you save? Quote a weyrling and have them take -4HP that can't be saved from! Quote a different weyrling and save them from their damage for a roll.

3. Things seem relatively quiet. You do as you're told and follow the direction of your superiors. Not bad. But not a whole lot happens, either. Is this what being a leader's all about? Simply waiting...?

4. You're asked to give the order to change formation. You don't agree with what Liat has suggested. Do you give the order? Or do you risk giving a different one? Only you and the Wingleader know what was asked... So what are you going to do? Regardless of what your character decides, roll 1 through 2 to see if your actions are justified. If you roll a 1, quote three weyrlings and have them take -5 HP! If you roll a 2, quote three weyrlings and save them a roll's worth of damage!

5. Now this is power! You feel like this is definitely where you belong. You're happy to follow Liat's direction but you can feel yourself gnawing at the bit to be the one making the calls. Fighting Thread isn't a problem. Ever vigilant, you spot a weyrling in trouble and sweep in to make the save. Quote a weyrling and save them from damage!

6 You are inspiring and a natural! Your dragon gives encouragement to those who need it, and an impassioned speech. You're really getting into this, and you definitely are feeling great. You're such a beacon of hope to the rest of your fellow weyrlings that they too seem inspired to keep up the fight. All weyrlings currently fighting Thread get +3 HP!

Leadership List
If you want your weyrling to be up for consideration as a temporary-Wingsecond during this game, just note it in your post or DM me in Discord! As we will only be running this for 4 hours ICly, we may not get everyone from the list.

D'mar & blue Strigonth
Ph'ton & blue Tinanath
L'nik & brown Hessianth
C'sar & bronze Illiandinth

This doesn't necessarily mean they volunteered, but Liat would know them well enough to know who she could depend upon and who might be interested in trying out a little extra responsibility on the side.

ICly, anything they do will have been approved or even recommended by Liat & Orioth or J'cheyn & Savaceth, depending on the time. OOCly, the Wingsecond gets to roll once per day from the Wingsecond list to perform some sort of action either as a solo-roll or in response to damage taken for that day. This is in addition to their 3 general rolls.

Round 1 - Day 1 - Roll 1: General Grid
Blue Strigonth: 12/12 hp
Held saves: 0

Quote:
Your dragon spots a silver strand of Thread. You visualize the space you need to go to flame it, but don't take into account the wind, or your dragon's flight speed. Instead, you appear Between but have completely overshot your airspace and are now out in the open, exposed, and with no Thread anywhere near you. Shaffit all! Don't you look the fool. Whoops.

As one the pair stared up at the sky, cloudy with its heavy load, not of life-giving rain, but of burning, biting death. With luck only ash would pass the blazing nets of dragonfire. Nets they were shortly to add to. It took little time and little effort to slip on the straps D’mar had made, the harness slipping into place, leather creaking slightly as they strode out with the rest to recieve their orders from Liat. The barest thrum of energy between man and deagon belied the undeniable nerves that came from the realization of just what they were about to do.

That tingle of concern was replaced with a rush of satisfaction when Liat named them wingseconds—if only for the start. Of course she would; the pair had not been quiet about their drive and their desires. Strigonth rarely fumbled, and they were both the clever, calculating sort. Even if they were not expected to do anything beyond what the rest were, to be chosen first felt like recognition indeed for their efforts and willingness to shoulder the burden of such a mantle.

Strigonth’s eyes whirled a deep (if pale), pleased green, and D’mar snapped a sharp salute before he effortlessly swung up into the straps, hooking himself in as the blue, head high and steps exacting, took up his appointed position. We will do our utmost to prove ourselves, as ardent defenders of Pern, foremost, and in this role as well. Thank you, Orioth, Liat. We will make you proud.

They rose in formation with the rest, a practiced flying V on slow but purposeful ascent. And then, mid-breath, they were gone, to reapper far above. Above, where the roar of dragonflame and a thousand flapping wings churned the air, plumes of ash rained down, and flashes of fire light burst like stars exploding overhead. The chaos of it was intense, the difference from the relative routine of their drills was stark. But their teeth and ambitions were bared, and the pair shrugged off the feeling as the blue took his stone and his rider scanned the sky.

There. Now. A strand had made it to their level, and out on the leading tip, the sharp-eyed pair spotted it first. With an inhalation, the blue blinked between, reappearing exactly where they had been focused...to huff out naught but air at the vacant sky ahead. They could feel it now, a stronger wind blowing back at them tht had no doubt shunted the strand back as they came forward. From behind they heard the fwoosh of a burst of flame (thankfully the strand had not slipped the rest of the wing), and with a subtle tweak of the wings, the blue slowed enough to drop back to retake his spot at the point. Their first mistake, but it had not resulted in injury or a threaded patch of the farmlands below. Such things were forgivable—and they would remember the winds the next time.

Round 1 - Day 1 - Roll 1: General Grid
Bronze Vedmath: 16/16 HP
Held saves: 0

Dezerac had checked theit straps and checked again, not out of any nervousness but simply as a matter of diligence.  Neither he nor Vedmath were feeling anything akin to nerves.  They had been training for this for months, putting in every hour that was required and more, to ensure that they were prepared.  For rider, facing injury and death was nothing new, and with His so cool and collected, dragon readily followed suit.  Neither was under the impression that they would come away unscathed, and both knew full well that there was a chance they might not come away at all, but any worry of such a future would be wasted.  Either they would be good enough - and lucky enough - to make it through their blooding, or they would not.

The pair was calm and quiet as they made their final preparations, with Vedmath brushing his mind wordlessly against those of certain other clutchmates.  Confidence and reassurance for little Loreleth, and friendly support with an undercurrent of eagerness for his brothers-in-arms Hessianth, Helsinth, and Akeroth.  Ah, but there were also amiable touches for Illiandinth and especially Strigonth, who had been singled out to play the role of their first Wingsecond. Orioth's has made a fine choice in trusting you and Yours with such an honor, brother.  I have no doubt that your performance will be a memorable one.

And finally, for a particular bright-hided green he knew would worry, a lingering whisper of fondness before they rose up for the fight - which began well enough for the pair, at least. Better than for some others.

Honestly? Isilje was terrified. She didn't want to be here, and fighting Thread? She knew what it could do to Riders and Dragons, and she was worried about Brancath. Carefully, she adjusted the straps on her beloved White, pulling the goggles she'd need to fly over her sensitive eyes, and wrapping her hood around her head. What would come of this, she didn't know, but Brancath seemed confident at least. The white rumbled low in her chest, leaning her nose down to nudge her tiny albino rider. Hush now, my love. We will be fine. Threadfighting is in a dragon's hearts, and I will not let any harm come to you. With that reassurance, the girl nodded, anxiously, before swinging herself in to the straps and petting a soft hide. Time to fly, this time, for Pern. Lifting in to the air wasn't quite as nervewracking as it had once been, though knowing their enemy was in the air made her feel almost like she wasn't much. Pressing to the white hide, lithe fingers gripped down as Brancath let out a bugle of challenge.

Thread was almost instantly blowing their way, but instead of being threatened, the White dodged out of the way before puffing flames out and burning the clump with little trouble. Simple, straight forwards, and then she was off for the next clump.

Day 1 / Round 1 / Roll 1: Gung-Ho Grid
Brown Aleyath: 13/14 HP
Held saves: 0

    Stop jittering.

    "I'm not."

I can feel you! Aleyath honked, a merry little whistle of approval that usually made an appearance when the dragon thought his rider was being particularly silly.

O'len grinned as he halted the bounce of his leg against the brown's hide. He wasn't nervous, though he knew he should be, he just wanted to get started already. To show Liat and Orioth that he and his distracted dragon had been paying proper attention all along. The man focused, taking in the report of favorable winds and the emotions crawling across the far away faces of his weyrmates. This might be the last time he saw them intact. He tried to hold them all in his mind as they took to the air, but just before Aleyath blinked Between, O'len's thoughts strayed to Lindir instead.

Once they reappeared under the silvery strands of floating death, there was no space in his head for anything but Thread.

They were initially directed to carry Firestone up up up to those who were flaming above, but Aleyath couldn't be content with that, especially not when a stray clump passed close enough to touch. He waited until his rider had tossed the bag of stones at the nearest Wingrider and then he breathed out an impressive bit of flame at the offending Thread, diving through the cloud of ash that had been left behind. A spark of surprise reached O'len's mind, though Aleyath didn't make a sound.

Sorry! I... didn't think that would happen.

On your way up, you can't help but show off a little. You flame a strand of Thread you didn't need to catch, and wind up burning yourself as you fly right through the ash cloud. Whoops. -1 HP You successfully deliver the stone, but are a little worse for wear.

Round 1 - Day 1 - Roll 1: General Grid
Brown Hessianth: 14/14 hp
Held saves: 0

Your dragon spots a silver strand of Thread. You visualize the space you need to go to flame it, but don't take into account the wind, or your dragon's flight speed. Instead, you appear Between but have completely overshot your airspace and are now out in the open, exposed, and with no Thread anywhere near you. Shaffit all! Don't you look the fool. Whoops.

L'nik always felt so tall sitting in Hessianth's finely crafted riding straps. He'd gone over them repeatedly for moments such as these, and his grandfather and mother had gone over them after him. Maybe it was cheating. There is no cheating when it comes to keeping you safe, my L'nik Hessianth reminded with a fond wave of affection - followed by a thrum of annoyance.

The group had assembled quickly enough, and there were some nervous ends more obvious than others. He had a feeling J'lar would be waiting until later to go up so he could calm and perhaps inspired Loreleth enough to go. He had a distinct feeling that they'd see Therianth up in the sky as soon as her eagerness could get her there. Strigonth had been tapped to be the Wingsecond for a time, and oh did that grate at Hessianth's nerves. L'nik thumped him on the shoulder. If it upsets you, take it from him, then. Show that we're good for it. It was easier and easier to direct that energy for distaste into something better, after all.

Which was also how he reeled Hessianth in from trying to be too showy. He was eager, yes, but L'nik had enough nerves to at least allow them to ease into it.

However, easing wasn't always so easy. It felt natural to be up in the air, but tighter jumps between weren't ideal, and while L'nik was able to place both himself and Hessianth right where he'd intended them to be, there was no thread to be seen once they got there. He felt a rumble of disappointment from his dragon who was eager to chomp at the bit already.

They won't fault us for a rough start. There's still plenty for us to get at! he assured, then forced the dragon onward.

The thing about not being quite so skilled in practice out the gate for predicting where Thread was going to move in these winds, was that when they came out from Between, there was some there that hadn't been before. While Hessianth didn't cry out in pain as it seered into his wing, L'nik allowed alarm to be his first response as it began to eat rapidly through his riding gear.

Where to?! Hessianth forced his rider into a position of decision making, and it was only with that nudge that he reminded himself to quickly navigate away somewhere - anywhere - else. But they would be fine with just this.

He'd need to reinforce his pant legs later, though. Sigh.

Brancath was so confident, it was hard for Isilje not to relax, grinning a bit confidently as they moved together. The next dive down, though, something happened. Her straps were loose, and the girl raised a bit higher than she should. With a cry of fear, she fell back in to the straps as the White swooped up, making her rider whimper in pain. Small hands reached down, tightening the offending strap with a shakiness that Isilje had to wonder if it was just...unbecoming. Shaking off the upset and fear, she took a breath in and let it out, Let's get back to it.

Dezerac and Vedmath both kept a careful eye out for Thread and for the positions of their fellow weyrlings, conscious of who was flaming where. The silvery strands were not the only danger up here, far from it, and they would be remiss to ignore everything else; inattention and tunnel vision were enemies, too. Neither one, however, was expecting strap problems - hadn't they checked those, over and over? - and there was a fleeting moment of 'Well, s**t' before Dezerac came back down hard on the seat.

That...hurt a bit. And was both disconcerting and deeply frustrating. He grimaced as he tightened the offending strap, and answered concern from Vedmath with a reassuring pat.

Vedmath's compliment bolstered Strigonth, the respect of his bronze brother (owed, earned) sending a sliver of blue tint through the battle-white eyes the dark dragon sported. We will strive to do our part to keep Pern safe, and to be worthy of the trust you and our siblings place in us now. The blue tucked into a stoop to send flame licking along a stray thread, scorching it to nothing with cool prejudice. Flawlessly then he pumped his wings, carrying his rider back up into formation. Their first victory of many, the blue radiated strongly.

Of course, the blue's smooth confidence was partially a shield from the minds of any fixating on his rider just then. D'mar had felt the straps slip as the blue had ducked down, and been airborne in his seat for the merest of moments. The rush of anger at himself for such a mistake (hadn't he double and triple checked those?!) drowned out most of the fear he'd felt (and certainly there had been some there), and his hands, shivering with frustration, had fought to tighten the leathers...once he'd come cracking down onto his rump in his seat. Outwardly he expressed none of the pain in his behind—he'd rather crack his pelvis before letting on about a mistake like that.

With the straps more snugly latched he bent low over Strigonth's neck, the blue sending a curl of comfort and reassurance to his rider. They'd gotten the thread, and that was what'd mattered.

Round one - day one - roll one
Blue Micheth
Hp: 12/12

Micheth was not looking forward to this. His rider was fearful and while he was trying to stem those fears, she wasn’t being reasonable. There was no reason for Ph’ton to get as injured as she was picturing. They had others to help, and he was smart enough to go to the Weyr in case he did. So where they. Micheth couldn’t say no one would die this day, but calming his rider was his priority. They couldn’t fight Thread with her frightened.

It will be fine, Mine. This is what we’re meant to do.

She directed him between, visualizing where Micheth had seen the Thread, but they overshot, and the Thread was no where to be seen. How embarrassing!
