Something strange was going on in the world and though they were small, a pair of wild dogs was adventurous enough to face it all head-on. Uokotaji was uneasy and, for the first time in a long time, missed the security of being in a pack.. but he had Buyu, and Buyu would not be deterred from their exciting life in the rogue lands. The pair had felt the quake that split the land and created the crater they were now hoping to investigate.. it had been a long journey and word about the toxic lake spread quickly but they were not to be deterred.

"So far, we haven't met anybody particularly excited about this," Uokotaji muttered under his breath, knowing Buyu wouldn't care and mostly talking it out to himself now that they were getting close, "It's definitely something you want to see for yourself.. but what good would come from it.."

Buyu's ears were turned back towards her mate but she only shook her head and continued leading the way. Obviously they had to investigate, they would just have to be careful!

"Look!" she exclaimed, picking up the pace so they could finally get a good look at the mysterious lake. It was as disgusting and ominous as the rumors said, and at the same time strangely alluring. Uokotaji came up beside Buyu and looked down into the crater curiously.

Strange times were upon them all, and Pallas had quickly discovered that the Haven was not at all a safe place to be. The goddess shook her head regretfully at how close she'd come to the dueling duo whose power far surpassed her own.

So to the mortal realms she'd come and, not too long into her sojourn Pallas had heard of a strange new lake, possibly resulting from the battle above. She'd gotten directions from a grumpy vulture and now found herself nearly there. Sure, it would've been faster if she'd flown. But the goddess only liked flying on days when the air was so thick it almost felt like swimming.

Oddly enough, she wasn't the only one in the area. She was approaching from a different angle, but could see two figures looking around. Intrigued, she chose to hail them.

"Hallooooo the lake!" Pallas called out.

Both canines were so intrigued by the strange sight of the lake below that neither noticed the goddess approaching nearby. When she called out to them, it was Buyu who looked up and spotted the strange bright spot in the dark and ominous surroundings. She recognized the shape as a lion, a well dressed lion, but did not realize it was another god.

A third party investigating something dangerous could be a good thing. Buyu nudged her mate to get his attention.

"Hey, Thorn," she said, "Look."

Uo didn't look up right away..

A little disappointed that neither of the...canines, they were definitely canines...had responded to her hail directly, Pallas finished her journey and came up to the pair. She opened her mouth to greet the one who was looking towards her and noticed that the other seemed to be engrossed in the lake.

"Hey, have you seen anything in there?" the goddess asked as she took a step closer to get a better look for herself.

Quote:
Rolling for Uokotaji & Buyu: You fall headlong into the water...and, speaking of heads, you hit yours on the way down!  Dazed, you struggle to to stay above the water, and gulp some down on your way back to the edge.  You will be deathly ill and fevered for at least two days, and spend a further two weeks getting back to full strength.  You also develop temporary skin issues, and some of your fur falls out!

(( Dammit, guys. This wasn't supposed to happen.))

Uo heard Buyu talking to him, and the sound of someone approaching, but he was sure he could almost see something in the water. Though his ears turned toward his mate, he inched closer and closer to the edge and watched the water intently. When he suddenly sees the huge, dark shadow move through the water he nearly jumps out of his fur with a yelp-- and he's already too close to the edge.

"We haven't," Buyu answered Pallas at precisely the wrong moment, turning quickly when Uokotaji suddenly cried out and expecting him to be ready to correct her. What she wasn't expecting was to see her mate fall, as if in slow motion, over the edge and tumble towards the water. She instinctively moved to save him but as soon as the water is in sight, she too sees the shadow pass and panics.

"Uo!" she cried, losing her footing and ultimately sliding down the incline after him. It all happened at once and with a loud splash, both were in the murky water. If there was one thing they would have agreed on about this whole investigation, it would have been that there was absolutely no way either of them should go into the water.

Then things happened almost too fast for the goddess to process. One of the dogs said there was nothing to see just as the first started sliding down towards the lake and then the speaker followed suit. Pallas spared a moment to give the waters an unhappy glance - something truly was wrong there - before scrambling after the pair. She couldn't let the clumsy canines drown or worse, die.

The goddess reached for the pair, but they'd already ended up in the lake. Taking a quick breath, Pallas dove in after them.

Pain.

Whenever she entered a body of water, Pallas automatically used her power to breathe underwater. It worked best in freshwater lakes of course - saltwater tended to leave an...aftertaste. But this lake was nothing of the sort and she actively did not want to breathe it in. Just being in it hurt. Thankfully, the wild dogs hadn't drifted too far. Grabbing one in a paw and the other in her mouth, the goddess hauled herself out of the not-water as quickly as she could.

Then she flopped on the shore, gasping for clean air as she felt unpleasant tingles all over her body.

After two rough trips down the edge and a horrifying dip into the water, neither wild dog had time to get themselves oriented before the kindly god rescued them. Both came out of the water gagging and gasping for breath, having swallowed no small amount of the ghastly stuff. Buyu lay on the ground coughing while Uokotaji did his very best to get some of the water back up.

That they didn't immediately die was almost unexpected, but it didn't feel like they fell into water but it didn't immediately burn, it just felt bad and wrong.. and both of them knew it had been a stupid mistake to come here.

"Th-thank you-" Buyu stammered, slowly pushing herself back up to her feet.

"You're welcome," the goddess replied, her own voice hoarse as she spat out the taste of that...wretched thing masquerading as a lake. She was sore and in pain and could foresee that continuing for a time yet, and at that she'd almost assuredly be better off than these mortals.

Regaining her feet, Pallas glared at the hole of nastiness behind them.

"This place isn't safe," she declared. "I suggest you two find somewhere quiet and clean to recover, while I leave a marker for any future explorers."

Shaking, Buyu nodded fervently in agreement at the declaration. Normally, she would have wanted to know their rescuers name but more than anything else right now she felt the drive to get as far away from here as possible. Uo finally walked over to his mate and leaned against her.. and immediately they each had to struggle with the battle between the physical discomfort of the pressure on their fur and the emotional comfort of being close.

"Don't need to tell us twice," Uo said, nudging Buyu. The wrongness of leaving without even properly meeting someone they had crossed paths with, someone who had possibly saved their lives.. it was still a small nagging feeling in the back of their minds but they ignored it.

They were going to get the hell away from this "lake".

Pallas watched the pair with some concern until she was certain they'd made it safely out of the vicinity. She herself was uncomfortable, but at least she had better means to get away. First though, she did mean to make it clear that the lake was to be avoided. Then she could go sleep somewhere better.

The goddess piled a bunch of rocks together in a cairn along the easiest footpath towards the not-lake, then stuck a skull on the top of her pile. Hopefully it was enough of a universal symbol that anyone venturing nearby would see and understand.

As for herself, Pallas summoned her power and took flight, feeling her fur already starting to fall out. It was a moonless night as she soared through the sky, eye finally catching sight of an inland body of water. Not too large, but large enough to satisfy her. Gracefully arcing her body, the goddess plunged into blessedly clean water, sighing in relief and pleasure.

She'd hide out here for a time, at least until the effects of that horrid place had worn off.
