Day 1 - Lion

I feel a little silly starting with a study, but I’m out of practice and not going to beat myself up about this.

Day 2 - Where's the orbs?

Posting early because I've got a busy busy day tomorrow! This could be pretty with color if I have time to come back to it later...

Day 3 - Nightmare fuel

This is such a personal nightmare I don't think I need to put it in a spoiler. XD



When I was younger, I had a reoccuring nightmare set in a great white void, with a far door to a more hospitable place. The door would be closing and I would run and struggle to reach it in time, often being caught half-in as it slammed shut.

I tried to get across the concept, not sure I totally succeeded.

Day 4 - Self portrait

Sketches and a color study for a self portrait painting. Hoping it will be better than my last self portrait painting!

I need to go buy some magenta paint.

Day 5 - Tutorial

Underpainting! I read a lot about this and learned some interesting things. This particular painting, the actual assignment was to use a bright color of underpainting, so mine is magenta. Here are a few tutorials I found really informative:

I also learned that while most traditional art methods don't necessarily translate to digital, I sometimes do this thing while working digitally that is extremely similar to grissaille. Basically, paint your picture in grayscale, and then go over with washes (overlay layers in digital) and add color in layers.

anyway, enough rambling, here's the underpainting for my self portrait painting. I'm going to tweak it later, once I've had a break from staring at it. Plus, it's an underpainting, it's going to be mostly covered up anyway. XD

Day 6 - Flaming Skull

Day 7 - Griffin (and Travis and Justin)

Day 9 - Rocky Mountains

I live in the Rocky Mountains, this is about a 20 minute walk from my house in northern Utah, near the Idaho border. Oil pastel from my own photo.

Day 10 - Improve (definitely not finished)

Improvement of Day 5. I currently look like a 50 year old woman with an endocrine problem, but I no longer look like a ghoul on the hunt from children's souls (like I did 30 minutes ago), so I'm going to take that as a win.

Why oh why did I decide to do a portrait for a painting were brushes are verboten. gonk
