Well, that was it then. The mighty corporal had been defeated in the first round and he hadn't even come 'top' of the losers, as far as he knew. He wasn't sure whether it was better or worse to have lost against the 'favourite' but despite being uncharacteristically humble in the arena, he was now moping about on the outskirts of the training grounds, grumbling lowly under his breath.
Life just had a way of knocking you flat. And Azar felt like he'd had his fair share of knocks by now. Stupid life making things so damned difficult all of the time! Where was his lucky break? When would his time be to rise up and shine and make everyone realise that he was a great Firekin?
Growling, he swept a paw over the sand and dropped down onto it with an aggressive huff.
Not too far away, Heti was weaving through the crowds in an attempt to find his father - and maybe his sister, too, as apparently she had also signed up. Unlike many Firekin who might be eager to show off their victory, Heti seemed a little embarrassed by it. He'd not only won, but he'd won quite well and had been met with some surprise when he'd kindly said he wished to go no further.
Surprise might have been putting it kindly. He was worried now that the others might think him weak or cowardly for stepping out at this early stage. But he had his reasons and, ironically, he was more afraid of winning and potentially passing his father in rank.
And the longer he sought his family members the more worried he became that their outcomes had not been the same as his.Ecavi Yay, quality family time~~ XD

Xiuhcoatl already had her father in sight when she spotted Heti on the move, almost certainly coming this way to check in. Based on her father's posture, she was guessing he hadn't had much success either.. but he was the cranky sort so maybe not. Either way, she decided to beat Heti there and approached without a word, dropping down onto the sand at her father's side. "Round one report?" she asked, not looking at Azar but instead watching the distant crowd and keeping an eye on Heti and his likely approach.

He turned an ear towards the sound of his daughter approaching and, at her question, gave a low huff. For a moment it seemed like the sound might be his only answer. Then, at last, he said: "The kid got lucky. I didn't. Next time, they won't know what hits them." He vowed that, when the tournaments came around again, he'd come top and he wouldn't let anyone get in his way. He'd be a captain someday, if it was the last thing he ever did.
His eyes lifted to glance at Xiuhcoatl then, trying to process the expression in her face.
"How about you? Please tell me we have one success in this family!"

Heti was there now, a few paces behind where his father and sister reclined. He'd not really caught what Azar'bijan had said but from the lion's expression and body language he knew it was not good. If the corporal had won his bout there was no way he'd be here now moping about. He'd be strutting around the arena declaring his victory to any who were willing to listen.
Still, perhaps his sister had found better luck on the battlefield. She was as good a guard as one could be. She stood just as good a chance as he had. And, to be honest, he was still surprised that he had done so well.
