Fear.

It radiated through ever fiber of her being and she wasn't sure what to do. She wasn't even sure if any of her family was still alive at this point. She just knew that her mother had nudged her into the bushes and told her to go. So she did and now here she was. She couldn't remember how long she had been wandering for, she just kept going in one direction and she had no idea where she was or what she was going to do. She spotted mountains all around but nothing was familiar to her.

A shiver ran through her as her body finally told her she couldn't go on any more and she suddenly felt cold and weary. She found some brushes not to far away and dragged herself into them and curled into a tight ball and shivered some more. She tucked her tail around her face as she kept her eyes peering out around her. Was it even safe to fall asleep?

Now that she was no longer moving everything seemed to dash into her mind at once. A million unanswered questions. Why did they attack her family? They had just wanted to help and they turned on them. Was everyone like that outside of her family, if she even had a family now. She wanted her mother and she felt tears starting to brim on her eyes as thought of the possibility of never seeing her again. Finally weariness overtook her and she broke down into tears and sobbing.

It wasn't fair! What had they done to deserve such a thing. Maybe that was the problem? That they had been too nice and welcoming? But they had done it before and something like that had never happened so why now? She supposed it wasn't worth worrying about it now. It was done and over with and she was all alone.

Fyja was in good enough spirits these days. His sons and daughters had reached adulthood, and were starting to pick and pair off with other fine upstanding lions of their pride and clan. The dark lion felt nothing but love and pride for those he'd had a paw in raising—they'd grown up well, the lot of them, if he were asked—but the den felt decidedly empty now with just himself and his beloved wife inside. Perhaps Zia could be convinced that more cubs might fill the empty space...

Or, as it turned out, maybe he'd find something else for them to dote on.

Something shivered beneath a bush, rustling the leaves and catching his sharp ears. He wasn't terribly hungry...he'd gone 'hunting' more to stretch his legs than anything...and a moment more's listening told him easily enough that it was a bit too large to be a hare or anything like that. Silently he crept forward, peeking through the branches to find...a cub? He stepped back, looking about for any nearby adults. None revealed themselves, and the wind bore only his own scent and that of the cub. How very odd.

A second look over made it plain that the child was not of Ela'wadiyi stock. No tattoos, no satchel or feather in her fur. And she (he was fairly certain it was a she) didn't smell like the people of the Ela did. She was a stranger, in their land, but a cub was innocent. Gingerly he lowered to his belly, peering in among the leaves but not going in after her.

"Are you alright there, little one?" His voice was barely above a whisper, even and kind and warm. He didn't want to startle her if he could help it, but for the sake of her safety, if she bolted he'd probably have to give chase.

In her moments of grief she had failed to notice the approach of the dark lion, or the fact that he had laid down nearby, that was until he spoke. Despite the kind nature of his voice she wasn't exactly fooled. The voice wasn't anyone she knew, nor was his face and she instinctively pulled away and pushed herself further backwards. "Who are you!" She hissed, her fur stood on end and her little claws were extended, not that they would do much good to her against him.

She waited for him to come closer, or to even attack but nothing happened and no attack came. She then realized he smelled wrong too. He didn't smell like the strangers and he didn't smell like her family. She stared at him and debated running at that moment, but he'd catch her. His attention was on her and there wasn't much she could do.

"If you're going to kill me just do it now." She said admitting to herself externally and internally that maybe she wasn't meant to live. His voice hadn't been mean, nor had his actions, but neither had the strangers that attacked her family. Maybe it was a ploy to get her to come closer to him so he could attack. Either way she wasn't going to make it easy for him to kill her. She may have accepted her death was immanent but she still chose how to go.
