Agni-pariksha was one of two recently made Regents of the Motoujamii-Simo and her plan to celebrate was the same as her plan to test her new partner. Her opinion of her fellow candidates was split, they both seems capable lions and that mattered most.. but damn if she wasn't more at ease with the idea of working closely with the former Legate. Their ideals seemed more closely matched. The Doctor would have made it harder to see a proper end to the threat of the Nergui and impossible to look at exploring and expanding their borders. For now, she would not be convinced either of those wouldn't be fo the best.
But that could wait. She paced the sand opposite Tapana, ready to see exactly how the other regent handled herself in a fight. Her opponent was larger than her and had her share of scars, but there was no guaranteed winner here.
"Are you ready?" she called, grinning.

Tapana smiled across at her 'other half', secretly impressed by her fire and determination. That the pair of them had won the votes of their pride was a sign that their people were as fiery and determined as they had ever been. Things might have changed since the days of old but the lions in the desert were unmoving.
It stirred her heart with pride.
"Dear Agni-pariksha," she purred, stepping forwards in acceptance of the challenge. "I was born ready. As were you, I should think." The large female gave the slightest dip of her head and sank into battle-posture, flattening her paws to the ground and bolstering her stance.
Ah, yes, this would be fun.

Move 1/5: Miss! Total: 1
She gave a snort of laughter at the way Tapana spoke to her, it was a rare thing for someone to speak so formally to her.. but she supposed she ought to expect that now, even from her new partner. Tapana was in for a surprise if she expected that kind of talk from Agni-pariksha, but if she paid any attention leading up to the votes, she would know that.
She offered her own respectful nod, watched as Tapana got into position, and lunged forward without warning. If was lucky, she would catch the other Regent by surprise. If she wasn't, at least she would get her moving.

1/5 - glancing attack Total: 2
Unfortunately for Agni-pariksha, her fellow regent was ready, leaping to the side to avoid the first of the attacks. A huff of breath left her and the smile renewed on her maw as she span to face her opponent, kicking up a swath of sand as she did so.
She had barely got her paws beneath her again before she lunged in retaliation, flicking up a fore-paw in an attempt to land a good head. The lack of finesse, unfortunately, saw her paw glancing too far.
She let out another breathy chuckle, tail swishing.

Move 2/5: Hit! Total: 4
"s**t!"
Agni-pariksha not only missed Tapana but nearly got a face full of sand for her trouble. It was a move to avoid this that helped her throw off her opponent's aim when a paw came up, and she jumped back just enough to get her weight onto her back legs and spring forward once again. This time she didn't aim directly for Tapana but landed beside her and struck out to try to get her feet out from under her. With paws flying as they were, Tapana ought to be easier to knock off balance- and that could only mean good things for Angi-pariksha in this duel. Despite her initial blunder, she was grinning again.

2/5 - Bide Total - 4
Her hasty attack had left her open, Agni-pariksha's paw connecting hard against her shoulder, knocking a foreleg out from under her and causing her to stagger forwards, struggling to regain her posture before she could be hit again and pinned.
Dropping the offensive momentarily, she pushed off with her backlegs, throwing her weight forwards - and though it looked ridiculously clumsy - she found her paws, twisting back to face her opponent, spitting sand from her mouth.
"Good hit," she complimented briefly, eyes fired up.

Move 3/5: Bide Total: 6
Before she could get tangled up with her stumbling opponent, Agni-pariksha pushed herself away to analyse the situation. Instead of springing immediately back into action, she watched as Tapana righted herself and studied the look she gave. She didn't stand idle, though, and began to circle thoughtfully.
"Good recovery," she shot back, waiting for Tapana's revenge.

Tapana smirked, settling her paws more firmly into the sand, tail swishing behind her as if trying to calculate how much power she would need to leap and close the gap. Whether she was calculating it or not, she would never admit, for a moment later and she had sprung aloft.
The gap, it seemed, had proven to much a challenge.
Her swing went wide, missing by the breadth of a whisker as she landed heavily, retracting her paw to ensure she didn't stumble upon landing.

Move 4/5: Hit! Total: 9
Instead of moving, Agni-pariksha braced herself when Tapana came lunging for her. It was a bold move, considering the old blooded lioness had size and momentum in her favour-- but she fell just short of landing a blow. It was tempting to reach out for her legs again but this wasn't a lesson with a newbie, she would be better prepared if her opponent tried to same move again.
So instead, she stayed where she was and reached up to give Tapana a paw to the face. It was an instinctive reminder that getting into someone's personal space meant either landing the blow that got you there or being prepared to react when they reached out to strike back.

4/5 - miss Total: 7
Agni-pariksha's strike was well deserved and true, cutting Tapana a hefty blow across the face that had her staggering sideways across the rough terrain. The large female paused to rub a paw across her nose and snorted as if to clear her nostrils of blood - though none could be seen sputtering forth.
She laughed then, shaking her head. "You caught me well, there, partner." Shaking her head again, a small bead of blood trickled down from her nose. Even now she could hear her old teacher's words ringing through her head. Too much haste. Use more judgement. Blah de blah de blah. It was all true, of course, but some lessons Tapana could never learn when it came to fighting. The heat of the moment caught her blood and she went with her instinct. Instinct worked well against another who had no training in battle but when they did...
Still, it wasn't over until it was over.
She feigned a move to the right then switched to the left, her less dominant paw cutting through the air towards the other regent.

Move 5/5: Miss! Total: 10
"Come on now, show me what you got," she said, chuckling at the compliment. They both seemed adept at avoiding ill-considered attempts by their opponents, but so far Agni-pariksha had yet to see Tapana truly strike. She wasn't sure if she was holding back and waiting to see what the former Brigadier did, or if she really was unprepared. Or perhaps she was just unlucky, but Agni-pariksha put little stock in luck when it came to fighting.
A move to follow Tapana helped her dodge the blow aimed at her, and set her own counter-attack way off target when she reached up to meet her. In the end, they looked more like they were dancing than fighting.

5/5 - glancing hit total: 9
"Well I am trying, you know," Tapana laughed, wiping at her face again, shifting across the sands to avoid another strike. Another hit on the nose might bring tears to her eyes and she didn't want to be seen crying during their first duel together. After today she was sure there would be many.
Again Tapana danced around a couple of false attacks, yet even when she went in for true, she could only manage a light touch. Her opponent was too quick on her paws! She could pretend that she wasn't really trying that hard, but that would have been false.
"Well if you would just stay still, maybe I could land a hit!" She called out with mock irritation. "No, no, it's too late to come back from this. I concede. The victory is yours, my dear." She bowed her head and took a step back. She was already looking forward to their next clash, even with a smarting nose.

Agni-pariksha laughed when Tapana conceded, finally standing still and offering a nod of acceptance. With a chance to finally catch her breath, she was quite loud. She didn't learn what she expected from challenging Tapana, but she learned a lot.
"You'll be better prepared next time," she said.
