Little is known about the upcoming Pokémon Heart Gold & Pokémon Soul Silver games. At the moment, all we know is that they are remakes of the original Gold & Silver games, set in the Johto region and coming out for the DS in Autumn/Fall of 2009.

As these games are remakes of Gold & Silver, they will feature both Johto & Kanto and follow the storyline of you as a new trainer, going through the gyms of Johto and Kanto, and winding up needing to thwart a Team Rocket plot to takeover the world with their Pokémon.

Even though it will follow closely on the basics of Pokémon Gold & Silver, there are a variety of new features brought into these remakes. Firstly, all the game mechanics are brought up to the 4th generation standards. Second, one of the major new features is that you can have any Pokémon follow you in the games. This way, you can truely personalise your experience.

In addition to the areas previously in Johto, there are new areas to be found within Johto. In addition to that, there are non-Johto Pokémon to be found in it including Kyogre in Heart Gold, Groudon in Soul Silver, Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia & Giratina.

Heart Gold & Soul Silver is also packaged with a new peripheral; PokéWalker, which will allow you to transfer a Pokémon to it to train it up as you walk around your normal life.

More info is expected to come soon so be sure to check back here often.

A few hours ago, another CoroCoro picture showed up on the Japanese forums. This one involves Jirachi. A special distribution of Jirachi is to begin on June 19th (for the japanese games, I think.). It is at Level 5 and is said to have special attacks. It also unlocks a new area in Heart Gold & Soul Silver when traded over. The method of distribution is as of yet unknown but as soon as we are sure, we'll let you know.

The official site has updated with all the information from CoroCoro. It didn't provide any further information but did confirm that the new area Jirachi unlocks is a PokéWalker specific area and that it will be available over standard WiFi. It also showed a bigger map of Johto which showed a new area to the West of Cianwood City as well as a massive new building just west of the Goldenrod Radio Tower. Many new pictures were also released and as such, they have been added to the pre-release picture page. LINK

Some further scans have come out and have shown that the Pokémon that follow you are not limited to the starters. There are screenshots of Steelix, Wobbuffet and Kecleon following the games character. You can turn to your Pokémon at any time and get some sort of dialogue with them to see when they're happy or in trouble. You even seem to be able to collect accessories from them similar to in Amity Square. All 493 Pokémon are capable of following you.

The official site has just updated. It gave us no further information, but it has stated the Japanese Release Date for Heart Gold & Soul Silver. Like predicted based upon the figure release of the Johto starters announced back in April, the release date is September 12th 2009. It will also ship for the usual price of 4800 yen.

Aesthetic changes

* Gold receives a redesign while a new player character apparently replaces Kris.
* The DS's 3D capabilities are utilized in selecting the starter Pokémon.
* The PokéGear has been redesigned. Now, it features two designs, one blue and white for males and another white and pink for females.
* Much like Kanto's was for its remakes, Johto's Pokédex has been redesigned; however, just the same, it retains the same Pokédex order referred to as the "New Pokédex" in Generation II.
* An image of certain locations, similar to that of FireRed and LeafGreen, appears when entering the location.
* Team Rocket Grunts are designed like they were in FireRed and LeafGreen.

Location changes

* Elm's Lab has an upstairs level.
* Maps have been remade to match the design style used in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

Gameplay changes

* All 493 Pokémon are capable of following the player similar to Pikachu in Yellow. CoroCoro showed several examples including Steelix and Wobbuffet. Shininess is apparently retained. More specific details are currently unknown.
* Similarly to the event Shaymin and Regigigas's effect on Platinum, the Pikachu-colored Pichu to be given to those who have pre-ordered tickets to the twelfth movie will unlock an event near the Ilex Forest Shrine featuring a Notched-ear Pichu.
* The Pokémon storage system, bag, party interface and the screen that pops up when pressing the Start or X buttons in the previous games all use the Nintendo DS's touch screen.
* Groudon and Kyogre will appear in SoulSilver and HeartGold, respectively, after the Elite Four, and Rayquaza can be caught in both games once the other members of its trio are brought into the game.
* Cynthia and Arceus are shown together in a new section of the Ruins of Alph named the Shinto Ruins. This event will allow players to obtain one of Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina, at level 1.

Like the GBA Wireless Adapter that came with FireRed and LeafGreen, HeartGold and SoulSilver will be packaged with a bonus: a Poké Ball-shaped pedometer called the PokéWalker that will link to the games and hold a Pokémon, increasing its experience and happiness as the wearer walks.

In Pokémon Yellow, a new feature was introduced which had your starter Pokémon, Pikachu, follow you around. Pikachu was always behind you and you could always check it to see its happiness. This feature later returned in Amity Square in Diamond, Pearl & Platinum, with a limit to 20 Pokémon. In Heart Gold & Soul Silver, you once again get a partner Pokémon. However, it is not limited to your starter Pokémon.

In Heart Gold & Soul Silver, as soon as you get your Pokémon, Professor Elm will say that your Pokémon can come out and walk along with you. Originally, this would seem to follow the precedent set with Pokémon Yellow, however every single Pokémon can be sent out to follow you. From Bulbasaur to Arceus, you can have any of your favourites follow you. To do this, all it seems you need to do is have the Pokémon at the top of your team and it shall be sent out.

Interaction

Like with Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow, you have the ability to interact with your Pokémon. If you turn around and face your Pokémon, simply press A and you will get to see the mood of your Pokémon. Whether it's happy with you, apathetic or is in trouble due to low health or a status condition. This will allow you to be able to quickly guage how your Pokémon is doing.

Items

As with when you take your Pokémon out for a stroll in Amity Square in Diamond, Pearl & Platinum, when you are out with your Pokémon in this game, your Pokémon will sometimes find items. These items include Berries and Accessories for your Pokémon. It is unknown if there's just a set list for the Pokémon to get or if each Pokémon has a unique list of obtainable accessories.

PokéWalker is a new bit of hardware which is said to be bundled in with Pokémon Heart Gold & Soul Silver. This bit of hardware is special in that it will allow you to transfer one Pokémon from your HeartGold & Soul Silver games onto PokéWalker. As PokéWalker is a *****, when you walk about, your Pokémon will slowly raise level and happiness. This will allow you to raise your Pokémon as you go about your daily lives.

However, that is not all. As you play on your PokéWalker, you will occassionally come across mini-games of sorts. These mini-games will also have an effect on your Heart Gold & Soul Silver games. One includes finding of items while you're walking. These include items such as Potions. You will also sometimes come across wild Pokémon while you play. It is currently unknown if you have to battle them in the same manner as the main games

Sending Pokémon to PokéWalker

To send Pokémon over to PokéWalker, you have to open a specific menu in-game. The location of this menu is currently unknown. In this menu, you can select Pokémon from boxes and send them over to PokéWalker. It appears that there are three slots for the Pokémon in PokéWalker.
In communication with PokéWalker, you can keep track of certain variables from it including how many steps you have taken and how many watts you have built up. When you build up more Watts, you can access more areas.

Areas

When you send over your Pokémon to PokéWalker, you will have to select a certain area that your Pokémon shall walk through. There are a variety of areas to walk through. You start off with two areas to go to and unlock more as you go on. Below is a table of all the areas and how to get them

Quote:
Area Activation Method
Refreshing Field ------ Primary area?
Noisy Forest ------ Primary area?
Edge of the Night Sky ------ Transfer Event Jirachi to HGSS

The items and Pokémon vary from area to area so you will have to go from area to area to get the best use out of PokéWalker

Battling Pokémon

To battle Pokémon on Pokéwalker, you have to use the PokéRadar item which will only work if you have built up enough Watts. Here, it will give you four pieces of grass. You have to select one and a Pokémon may come out. Once the Pokémon comes out, battling happens. This battle system is currently unknown, abut is likely to work in a similar manner to the in-game battles.

Details on the Pokémon in each area will come on the game's release.

The battle Tour in Japan has begun today (11-07-2009; Estimated) and features a demo for Pokemon HG and SS. According to a japanese blog of someone who went, like previous Festa and Battle Tower demos, it features gameplay in a small route, in this case; Route 37. You have to fight a couple of trainers in this route and have a choice of two teams to use: Chikorita, Snorlax and Pikachu or Cyndaquil, Lapras and Pikachu. There appear to be no further details apart from (further) confirmation of remixed music from Gold and Silver. The demo is avaliable at each Battle Tower event until September Sixth.

The final scans from CoroCoro this month have arrived and show the various things added on friday (update number 10) are true, apart from the Latios/Latias/Mewtwo stuff. It confirms that the Legendary beasts (Entei, Suicune and Raikou) are to be level 40 when they roam.
CoroCoro also reconfirms the apperance of Pokegear within the game, appearing in the menu as usual. It contains the same features as before; more specifically, the Phone, Map and Radio, along with a new addition, the Itemfinder. It (CoroCoro) also shows the capturing of pokemon on the PokeWalk.
CoroCoro has also confirmed that the special Notched-ear Pichu that you obtain using the Pikachu-colored Pichu given away at the 12th movie are unable to be traded, and it cannot evolve. It also seems that you can register two key items in this game, and they are avaliable via the touchscreen. I've added a variety of pictures to the picture page, and will continue adding as more come. Click here to go to the Picture page. The list is sorted from oldest to newest; new pictures will be at the bottom of the list.

Pokéthlon is a new game feature introduced in Pokémon Heart Gold & Pokémon Soul Silver. In a currently unknown location in Johto is the Pokéthlon Dome. This Dome is where a whole new Pokémon contest stands. However, the Pokéthlon is much different to the contests of Hoenn & Sinnoh. The Pokéthlon provides a variety of different games and events for the Pokémon to take part in. You always enter with three Pokémon. There are 10 different activities in the Pokéthlon, but you don't necessarily decide on the ones you play. Instead, you select one out of five categories; Speed, Power, Technique, Stamina & Jump. From there, three activities are chosen based upon that. If you win the activity, you will get "Suron Points" which you can then exchange for prizes.

To enter in the Pokéthlon, you have to select three Pokémon. The Pokémon you select should reflect the option you chose. As such, the Pokémon have specific stats for each of the categories. It is not known how you can improve these stats, but the maximum stats do depend on the Pokémon that you are entering, so choose carefully.

Below are the Pokéthlon events that we know of;

-Dash Hurdles

Categories: Speed, Jump

The Dash Hurdles game is the first game that we were made aware of. This game is a race between your Pokémon and nine other Pokémon. It is a race in a straight line and it is controlled completely through the touch screen. Your three Pokémon are seen running on the top screen and are running essentially on their own. Your control is making your Pokémon jump the hurdles. This is done by simply tapping them on the DS's Touch Screen. The timing of the jump is crucial to build up speed as if you jump too early or too late, your Pokémon will collide with the hurdle. If you get the timing perfect however, your Pokémon will get a boost. You can see the upcoming obstacles on the top screen so you can be prepared for whatever Pokémon you need to make jump.

Even though you cannot see them, this is a race so you are against the clock and will have to try and claim all three of the top positions to obtain maximum points.

-Bounce Field

Categories: Technique, Jump

The Bounce Field game is the second game that we were made aware of. This game makes full use out of the Touch Screen. The object of this game is to make your Pokémon bounce upwards by pulling the stylus down and then flicking it up. This sends your Pokémon flying. The task is to hit as many lights as possible to turn them off during the time limit. Like the other events, all three of your Pokémon are in this event at the same time so you can make good use out of this by potentially flicking them in opposite directions.

The angle and depth of the throw is quite crucial to this game as it is possible to get multiple lights at once, thus gaining more points. Once the time limit ends, your score will be tallied against the scores of the NPCs and the winner shall be determined.

-Ring Out Fight

Categories: Power, Stamina

The Ring Out Fight game is another of the competitive games in Pokéthlon. Unlike the previous two events, this one has no focus on jumping but instead is similar to a sumo wrestling fight. One of your Pokémon is placed in a ring with three other Pokémon and you have to make sure they stay in the ring and knock Pokémon out of it at the same time. This is done by using the DS's stylus to flick your Pokémon into the other Pokémon. However, there are no walls in the ring so you have to make sure you only put a lot of power into the flick if you're going to collide with a Pokémon.

As you knock Pokémon out of the ring, other Pokémon will come in the ring until the time reaches 0. Once that happens, the Pokémon are ranked and the winner is determined by the amount of remaining Pokémon.

-Shooting Snow

Categories: Power, Technique

The Shooting Snow game is a Pokémon adaptation of a fun winter activity. This event pits your three Pokémon against three other teams of three Pokémon. Here, you are in a classic snowball fight against the other Pokémon. To control it, you just have to flick the Snowballs from your Pokémon to the other Pokémon. As such, the angle of the flick needs to be precise if you are to hit the Pokémon you desire. The power of the flick determines the distance the snowball goes. For each hit, you will get a point

When a Pokémon is hit by a snowball, they are temporarily dazed and will be unable to move or to throw a Snowball. As such, you have to move your Pokémon when a snowball is incoming in order to prevent your opponents getting a hit. This means you have to be focused on what your opponent is doing as well as what you yourself are to do.

-Charge Relay

Categories: Speed, Stamina

The Charge Relay is essentially another race in a similar manner to the Dash Hurdles. However, this game has you control one Pokémon at a time on a race track. Controlling them by using the Touch Screen, you have to get the optimum speed and pass from Pokémon to Pokémon at a variety of points.

This can get tricky due to the fact that obstacles will sometimes come on the course and you'll have to quickly avoid them so you need to be completely alert in order to win the race.

-Break Block

Categories: Power, Stamina

The Break Block activity requires your Pokémon to be strong and quick. You control one Pokémon at a time and you need to destroy the blocks in front of your Pokémon. This is also done on the Touch screen by tapping the blocks. It is best to get a good rhythm with this so that your Pokémon can get into the groove and hit the blocks successfully

Even though you're on your own, this is essentially a race to see who can destroy the blocks quicker and in higher amounts. As such, you need to plan the Pokémon you use strategically so you can win easier

-Push Circle

Categories: Power, Speed

The Push Circle is essentially similar to a game of King of the Hill. There are a variety of circles on the field and you have to control all three of your Pokémon and get them into the circles to gain points. The winners are those that are in the circle the longest. However, it is not as easy as it seems

As you are controlling all three Pokémon, and have nine opponents on the field at once, you will have to think even more strategically and try to push your opponents out of the circle. The smaller circles give you the more points so be sure to aim for those.

The Safari Zone

In the original games, Gold & Silver, when the player got to Fuchsia City, they would discover that the Safari Zone Warden has moved and so the Safari Zone there has moved. In Heart Gold & Soul Silver, we have found where the Safari Zone has moved to , it is now in the new area found west of Cianwood.

The Safari Zone works in a similar manner to the previous Safari Zones with you being given 30 Safari Balls and sent into the Safari Zone with only a limited amount of steps. There are six areas in the Safari Zone and they all hold different kinds of Pokémon so you need to explore if you wish to get them all. However, the Johto Safari Zone has a distinct difference.

Customisation

This new Safari Zone allows you to customise the areas. The customisation allows you to move where all six of the areas of the Safari Zone are. This is useful so you don't have to walk and waste a load of steps should you wish to find a Pokémon that is only in the Desert area. All you do is slide the areas around using the touch screen. All the areas have exits at the same place so there are no combination that you cannot do. There are 720 permutations so you can be unique and creative.

Throughout the game, you will be given a variety of special Pokémon if you meet certain requirements. Most of these Pokémon can be found in the wild as well, but many are simply exclusive to these gifts. As such, I have created a page detailling all of them. * In Gold & Silver, a contest was introduced called the Bug Catching Contest and it makes a return in HeartGold & SoulSilver.
* Another major discovery has appeared. After a certain point in the game, you have the ability to fully customise the Safari Zone with a variety of items in order to lure new and different Pokémon into the areas.
* We have discovered another in-game trade in the game. This trade is unique in that you can give any Pokémon in exchange for the Pokémon. I have added it to the in-game trade page. (http://www.serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/trade.shtml)
* Rock Smash returns in HeartGold & SoulSilver. Unlike in Diamond, Pearl & Platinum, Rock Smash allows you to battle a few Wild Pokémon at random points. However, in addition to that, you can also now find items under some rocks.
* Throughout the game, you will discover a variety of Pokémon that are blocking your way. These are interactable in a similar way to the Legendary Pokémon and as such, I have created a page detailling these Pokémon and how to get them. (http://www.serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/interactable.shtml)
* I have added further details into the Safari Zone page, detailling each of the regions. At the moment, there are only 12 zones listed, but it is said more come later on. I will also gradually add Pokémon listings to this section for each zone area, which can be tricky as you cannot check the Pokédex for them. Once you defeat him, he'll hear that Team Rocket has disbanded and will learn his mistakes and tell you that the Machine Part he stole from the Power Plant is stored within the LifeRings in Cerulean City Gym. Team Rocket is now defeated.

The main feature of the PokéGear is the phone. The phone is used just as you would think and can call a variety of characters within the game. These characters include trainers dotted around Johto as well as vital characters in the story such as your Mom or Professor Elm.

With the phone, you can both call-up and receive calls from these characters. They will give you vital information when you call or they call you and some will allow you to call for rematches or to obtain items.

If you have an appointment to rematch or to pick up an item, the map will display an exclamation mark in the area when highlighted.

Unlike in Gold & Silver, you don't have a limit to how many phone numbers you can register in the PokéGear so you have the ability to get all the numbers.

your welcome. I knew that it was likely that very little information was freely known by the pokemon-playing masses, if any, so I posted what information Serebii has up here on gaia.

That's the one thing I don't like about remakes, they change the pokemon that can show up dramatically.
Like, legends, Gold and Silver had it right at 5 legends plus an event legend. Why in the world would they hurt playvalue by including Groudon and Kyogre who are tied to Hoenn? or Dialga and Palkia whose home is in Sinnoh? or Rayquaza whose home is in Hoenn. and Giratina whose home exists outside of sinnoh, but's entrance is in Sinnoh? that's terrible planning on their part. Jirachi exists outside of any particular region, but it's a Gen 3 legends, This is a remake of two games that had the perfect balance of legends to nonlegendary pokemon, I don't see why they're screwing it up.

Having pokemon follow me is extra sprite work that I don't need, unless it increases happiness.
For the pokewalker, I'm only interested in it for some of the pokemon that are like Dragonite, reaching their final stage above level 40.
I want to know if Crystal or Silver are playable characters. Gold is kind of a d**k.

This new information enrages me about all of the changes that are going to transpire on two of my three favorite pokemon games.

Well I certainly don't mean to get anyone angry. I'm simply putting up information for new games, in case other people want to know about it.

Oh, I'm not angry at you. I'm more enraged that the programmers decided that updating the graphics, moves, wasn't enough to rerelease my favorite of the pokemon generations.

Crystal is not Playable. and I don't think Silver is either. Silver is still in the game, you still play as Gold, but, it sounds as though you can play as a girl still, unnamed yet. (they can't call her Silver, Silver is the son of Giovanni that is your rival, or should still be your rival.)

meet the newest pokemon playable character.

That is, to my knowledge, it may be wrong, but sources indicate that this lass is the female playable character for HG or SS. (if they call her Silver, there will be even more anger.

To be honest, I haven't been, although I had been taking a pokemon break up until Cynister PMed me earlier today.

Now's a good time to get back into it, though. With HeartGold and SoulSilver coming out in Japan this coming weekend (and me having already pre-ordered them from Play-Asia), it's the perfect time to finish my Jynx project. 3nodding

I can't wait for this, I miss my old silver game. It was the first pokemon game I ever played so It has a place in my heart. Although back then I didn't understand the games as much, so I didn't even ever finish it (I kept on creating new games). I'll be getting it on my R4 card, although first I want to complete my diamond and platinum. I've had diamond for like, 2 years I think. I don't know how I haven't finished it yet.

I'm excited about the fact that you can have you pokemon out with you. I'd maybe like latios and latias in it. and Mewtwo should be in it I think. but not Kyogre, Groundon, Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia and Giratina, who belong in regions that were no existent when gold/silver/crystal came out.

The reason Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza are in it are to start eliminating the need to Pal Park from the GBA games. (It indicates that they're not planning to remake the 3rd gen games on the DS.) I can respect that ; it indicates a level of understanding from Nintendo to avoid forcing people into buying more Nintendo products.

Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are really an event for the 4th gen games, even though the event is in HGSS...
