They tell you it's just a phase
Something you'll grow out of
At least when you're young,
or when they think they know better then it turns into
“That's not good for you,
I'm just trying to help you'll see”
Not realizing that every living being is different.
But I guess that's what I am
A phase to fall into
Whether it be a day, a month, a year
And then you will either realize what you're doing,
shake yourself off and walk away
Or realize they're right-
I'm toxic
I'm waste
I'm something that won't matter in a year
Forgettable
Waste of space
Just
Another
Face
And that's how phases start out
In the middle of a crowd you've picked them out
The junkie in their faded denim jacket
Or the college startup in their cardigan and blouse
The smoker
The clown
And maybe it's that you wish you were more like them
Or could be 'Part of their world'
So you emulate them
Pick up that pack
Buy those shoes
Dye your hair
But it doesn't change you
Underneath you're still the same insecure child who never knew that 'it's just a phase'
Was society's way of trying to reverse psychonalyze you into choosing their path.
And maybe eventually you do outgrow it. And maybe you never should have.
But that was it.
I was just another face in the crowd.
you picked me out and tried me on
Took me for a spin
And by the time my world stood still,
like everyone else-
You were gone.
