For the past three months, Kyle had happily been in a relationship. Her name was Miranda. Five feet tall, a runner, intelligent, and funny. In short, she was perfect. Kyle never thought of losing her until today. They never talked about it. He never thought about it. Today was different.
In two years, he would graduate. She would be free a year later. Then college would come. He had his sights set already on a college in Syracuse. She probably had no idea where she was going, yet. After that, they would be able to spend more time together, free from oppressive school time. Free from overprotective parents. Free from essays, projects, sports. Free from preps, drama, and constant pressure to “live a little”. Free from all that, to live how they wanted.
Maybe they would travel. They both wanted to visit the United Kingdom. They would watch the shops bustling with people, visit historic sights like Hadrian’s Wall or Big Ben. They would curse the wet weather in Scotland, and curse the drunks wandering the streets looking for candy shops. Maybe they would just settle down together, finding jobs they both enjoyed, possibly in the country, or in the city. They didn’t know.
Kyle thought about that as he lay in the street, forgotten. Time trickled by slowly as his life dwindled away. Every wanted to know how the little girl did, after being hit by the truck. Her savior laid a few away, broken, hurt, and abandoned.
