Black Ivory
By T.R. & E.H.
On ships we were forced to board
We were strung about like wood of cord
Death lingered in the air
But those white men did not care
Sold our souls to those unknown
They thought that we were theirs to own
They chained us up and took us out
Forced to roam the crops about
We walked the fields night and day
No time to rest or even play
Our limbs grew weary and old
But we obeyed and did as we were told
Our "masters" made it very clear
No talking between us was he to hear
No beat to make or drum to pound
In this hell, between us there was to be no sound
They took away our life
Worst than being stabbed by knife
We were forced to change and changed we did
For if we didn't our life was to bid
Our master thought that we were his to tame
So we simply twisted our master's game
We changed our way of tongue
And in the fields we simply sung
I AM BLACK IVORY
Not because of what's inside of me
Mistreated like no human should
Would escape if I could
Everyday our hearts yearned for freedom alone
And to be reunited with our family and home
It's now time for us to break down these walls
And escape to Northern Halls

Description:
This is a poem done in social studies class about African Slaves, the Middle Passage, or the journey from Africa to their enslavement in the New Worlds, and their hardships as a slave. This poem was not entirely by me because it was a partner-work. I gave credit to the person who helped produce this peice of work.
*The person who helped write this poem does not have a gaia, so I'm just posting it to see what the gaians think! - Date: 03/08/2009
