Commitment is nothing to fear, because commitment does not exist. There is no decision that you cannot go back on, no matter how much you dedicate yourself to it, no matter how obligated you feel to seeing it through, the option to back out always remains. But just because this undeniable truth exists does not mean you must live in constant fear of change, you must live in the moment, and you must live for yourself, because everyone around you lives in this same reality. They too can change their minds, so you must not count on anything being permanent, you must always be ready and willing to accept that when you wake up tomorrow your world can be an entirely different place than it was the day before. In order to accept this you must realize that this new world you find yourself in is no more permanent than the last, it too can change in an instant. When that instant comes, or if that instant comes can never be known for sure, and because of that you must still keep yourself in the moment, and you must remain willing and able to adapt to whatever is thrown at you. But just because the possibility of change is ever present, does not mean it can be counted on any more than a lack of change, because just as every person has the ability to back out on any decision they've ever made they also hold the ability to see that decision through. And because of this, living in the moment does not mean going through life never investing yourself in anything or never putting yourself out there, it means dedicating yourself to what you see is right at that moment without counting on it being there forever or fearing that it will disappear. Living in the moment means taking risks, but understanding and accepting that just as these risks may reap rewards, they may also end in failure, and with every failure there will be a new risk to take and a new chance to succeed. So rather than dwelling on past events you cannot change, or hoping for a future you cannot predict, you must do what is right for yourself at the very moment you are in because in reality that is all you are able to control.

- Description: A little essay I wrote shortly after the end of my first serious relationship, I later learned that the rant I found oh so genius was merely French Existentialism, but I still like it.
