Tears begin to spill from her eyes, betraying all of her convictions. Her heart filled with rage and agony, she had once again let her guard down and had gotten hurt. She felt stupid and weak. She had forced her self to go to school even when her grandmother said she didn't have to. She wouldn't let him break her. She wasn't going to give him the satisfaction.
She was already late to her second period class, and began walking to her fourth period. She was in no hurry to see the stamped of students she had once gone to comfort as friends. She began to walk down the slope to her fourth period, the bell rand. She quickly tried to compose her self, before her "friends" came along to create a scene.
Keeping her eyes to the floor, she kept walking a a steady pace. She watched the two gossiping girls walk by. She came to the stair, unsure if she was steady or strong enough. She grasped the rail as she slowly walked down. She kept her head down keeping to herself, as students began to rush be.
She was pushed to run down the remainder of steps. She turned, a boy had begun to apologize but all she could do was nod her head, turn and walk away. She kept walking, counting the class rooms as she passed. one more room till she was safely inside the back row of her Spanish class. She felt a cold hand on her shoulder.
"Are you ok?" she recognized the voice as one of her TRUE friends, Nikki, but she turned to look just in case.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine" she lied.
"It's him, isn't it? You know, he isn't worth it. All that s**t and pain he puts you through." Nikki could always see through all her pathetic excuses for lies, but the moment Nikki said that, all the feelings of weakness and stupidity welded up inside and no amount of lies could cover the betrayal of her eyes.
"Really, I'm fine" she lied once again not wanting to create a scene, which had already began to form. She could see a few former friends standing by wondering if she would be their next topic of gossip, it disgusted her.
"He's really not worth it" Nikki said again trying to comfort her. It had only made her feel worse, worse for being dumb enough to trust him. to let him get close enough to hurt her. The consoling words only made her eyes spill more, the fear of embarrassment forced her to find her friends shoulder. She couldn't believe herself. She was crying in front of everyone, she felt so weak, so vulnerable. She continued to cry into Nikki's arms.
"He's not worth your tears" the voice was new to her ears. A man's voice, strong, concerned and gentle all at once. She wiped away her tears and turned to look at him. He recognized him from a few days ago, valentine's day, her friend Adrianna had introduced him to her. His name was . . . . Victor. He had gentle eyes, and a sweet smile. She felt so open like it didn't matter if she cried in front of him.
"Come on I'll take you to class," Nikki said.
"It's fine I got it" She replied still completely memorized by him.
She slowly let go of her friend and began to walk around the ramp to her class. She couldn't keep her mind from wondering back to him, he made everything go away like it meant nothing. She made to her desk without anyone starring or asking her questions. Class was a blur to her she hardly remember what had been taught, she only wanted to get out of there and go to lunch to wash her face. The bell rang, she took her time to get out of class being the last one out.
She went to the farthest rest room in the school, not really caring what she did or who she saw for lunch. Not only did she go the farthest rest room she took the longest way also. Regardless of what had happened this morning, her thoughts kept going back to Victor. She made it to the restroom with a little less than five minutes before the lunch bell rang. Surprisingly there was hardly anyone there, she saw a few lower class men which didn't bother her but then she saw the trash can filled with left over valentine's day trash, which only reminded her of what had happened this morning.
She was filled with anger, she felt weak and vulnerable again. She walked over to the sink and began washing her face and some way she wished she could wash away those feelings. After drying off her face she left the bathroom and headed towards the library. The bell rang, She didn't care if she was late today and began slowly walking toward the quad.
"Hey, Samantha" hearing her name she turned to see Victor, hoping over the rail from the F building to her.
"Hi." she said lightly.
"Are you ok?" he asked with concern.
"Yeah I'm fine now, thanks" she felt herself blush but she knew it was wrong she hardly knew him.
"What happened?" he asked. She was about to brush the question off with a lie, she didn't want him thinking that she was just a pathetic little girl but something about him made her want to tell him the truth and open up to him.
"It was nothing, I got in a fight with my ex-boyfriend and he hit me."
"Did you do something?"
"No I was too shocked but my grandma saw and she ran after him with a broom" we both laughed a little. She found herself surprised that her was opening up to him she almost never let her guard down.
"Does he go here?"
"No, he goes to Corona high" she said a little confused.
"What grade is he?"
"He's a junior"
"How tall is he?" She had to think a little he was taller then her but shorter than victor. She raised her hand above her head.
"A bout this tall.."
"Ok then I can take him on. You want me to go beat him up next time he come to see you?" he asked.
"No it ok, my grandma did enough" She tried to smile, she was shocked no one had ever offered to protect her and he sounded so sincere. They had made it down to the slope leading to their classes.
"Everything is going to be alright, and he really isn't worth your tears" he said trying to comfort her.
"I know but i wasn't crying because of him, i was crying because of me, I felt so stupid letting him hit me like that, dumb that i let him close enough to do that. And mostly because i didn't hit him back, i just stood there." She looked down at her feet, she felt weak again. He laughed as he put his arm around her.
"You'll be fine, your strong" She was shocked that he put his arm around her, she didn't know how to react; do the same, pull away. So instead she just left it there and left her arms by her side. She also felt relieved by his words they gave her strength, and everything disappeared; the bad feelings, the pain. She looked up at him and she smiled. They made it down the stairs and in front of their classes while they were talking.
"Thank you, Victor. You made everything better."
"Your welcome" he replied and gave her a hug. She hug him back and they both turned away. And exactly four weeks later they started going out, everything was better when they were together. She was always happy, she stopped hurting herself. She changed she didn't close her self off anymore, she was changed for the better and it was all because of him.
