Chapter 1 The Beginning of the End

"Welcome back to the 250th episode of Talk Time With Laura Riley! Today as a special guest we have Skylar Lee. She has modernized space exploration and vacation. Her first exploit came as a more humble space explorer called HermesXI. Skylar, why don't you tell us about it?" The host, Laura Riley, smiled enthusiastically. A girl sitting across from her, who looked like she was in her fifties, with long blonde hair trailing down to the small of her back said, in a weary voice, "Why of course Laura. HermesXI was the first in a series of five large ships sent to explore outer space. Each ship could carry ten astronauts. Like never before in history, mankind was able to fully explore the surface of Venus, study the elemental make up of Jupiter, and even explore the icy depths of Pluto." Laura smiled that fake show-host smile and said "How exciting. Since we don't have enough time in the show to run through all the highlights of your career Skylar, we are going to list your many feats, and discuss the most successful of them."
"That sounds good to me, Laura."
    "Well then, lets start!"

    -50 minutes later-

"Now, lets move on to the real business shall we?" Laura said, showing her perfect white teeth. "Skylar, what do you and your company intend to do about the meteor threatening our society?" Skylar had a blank look on her face, and said, barely a whisper. "Nothing." Silence. Laura looked stunned, as did the millions of people watching the live broadcast. "What do you mean nothing. Surely you won't just let us all die." Laura's smile had disappeared to be replaced by a look of panic. Skylar cleared her throat before continuing carefully, "Well, any attempts to divert the meteor would be impossible. At this point it is too late to try and move it. Things like that must be done when it is still light years away from our planet." Laura had a look of anger, panic, and disbelief on her face. "So, we are all just going to die?"
    "Yes."
