Snow White had a bad life if you ask me. I mean, her mother died, her father married an insecure b***h who needs a magic mirror to tell her shes beautiful. And, when the mirror said that Snow White was the most fairest of them all, she gets so jealous she sends a woodsman to kill her! Then, the seven dwarves find her, and they take her in, as long as she took care of the house when their gone. The mirror still said Snow White was the fairest of them all, and the queen went to go kill her herself. She tried to suffocate her with a belt, poisoned her hair with a poisoned comb, and made her eat a poisoned apple! The dwarves come home and find their beloved Snow White dead, and they build a glass coffin for her so they could still see her everlasting beauty. A prince comes along and kisses her, and she marries him. Seriously, maybe Snow White didn’t want to marry the prince. Maybe she was in love with someone else. Has anyone ever thought of that? Maybe she just said yes because she thought it was her duty to her kingdom to marry the prince.
Maybe, just maybe, she might have been happy with him. You never know though. If Snow White had told you that she was happy with the prince, then you would know. But until she tells you, you always have to wonder. I can relate my life a little to Snow Whites. First of all, my stepmother, A.K.A. Queen of Bitchiness is the stepmother of Snow Whites. The king is my dad, and, if Snow White ever had an older sister, Kaylie would be her.
Who am I in that particular fairy tale? I’m not any one. I am a total different victim of the Queen. My father is a rich business man, and the Queen loves rich and powerful kings. My father is the rich and powerful king in this situation. He married her, and now she shows her true side to us princesses, Kaylie and I. Father is the only one who doesn’t notice how much of a b***h she is. Her magic mirror put him under a spell. Kaylie and I are immune to the spell.
“Snow White... what would you do, if you knew?” I murmured into the window of my new bedroom. It was fairly small, but I was okay with that. Small bedrooms mean that they kept this bedroom instead of remodeling it like the rest of the house. This bedroom had many occupants, and many, many stories to tell. I couldn’t wait to write them down.
My brown hair fell over my shoulders like a waterfall, and my green multi colored eyes looked around at the forest ahead of me. It was magnificent, like a forest in Ancient Ireland would look like. At least, I imagined a forest in Ancient Ireland would look like that. Marysville, Idaho was a small town in the middle of the mountains, with nothing but trees surrounding it for miles around. It was my kind of place to be.
A quiet knock interrupted my thoughts, and my sister Kaylie walked through the door. “Hey kiddo.” She said to me. “How are you holding up in this hell hole?”
“Hell hole?” I asked her, pretending to be shocked. “This is the most wonderful house of all, especially with Marcie here!” Marcie was the Queen of Bitchiness.
“Oh, definitely, and the way she says, ‘Annabeth Oake! You put that shot gun down NOW’ when your not even holding a shot gun is definitely un-hellish.” Kaylie sarcastically said in the quiet voice of hers. She was 18, and she looked exactly like what my mom looked like. She had the same golden blond hair, pale skin, and the crystal blue eyes of the Oakes, on my moms side of course. While I on the other hand, was the odd ball. I looked like no one in my family. She was currently going to high school, which was why she hadn’t left this family yet. She was engaged as well, to Justin. I really didn’t like him that much. He so full of himself.
“Welcome to my temporary sanctuary Kaytlinn Oake. Would you like to sit?” I pointed with the hand that wasn’t holding a cup of hot chocolate to my comfy couch at the end of my bed.
“Why I would love too!” She sat down on the couch, tucking her legs underneath her and smiling.
“You are in the presence of a princess!” I whispered quietly to her.
“I am? Who?” Kaylie whispered back.
“Princess Deirdre, of Ireland. She came here to America before it was even called America, before anyone had ever even seen America. She did it to escape Conner Mac Roy, the king of Ireland.” I whispered urgently. “You are in the presence of royalty.”
Kaylie bowed her head in the direction of where I pointed, pretending a long forgotten princess was standing there. “Welcome to Annie’s sanctuary, Princess Deirdre.”
I pretended to be having seizure, and a second later, I stood up gracefully ad held my head high. “Thank you for the welcome, Kaytlinn, daughter of Harold. “
Kaylie stood up quickly and curtsied. “What is the reason you have possessed my sister, princess?” She asked.
“There is a jewel with extremely powerful power. I must have it back before Queen of Bitchiness gets it first!” I said urgently. I heard footsteps coming down the hall and I got a random box and pretended to start unpacking. Another knock, another random person came in. It was Marcie, A.K.A. Queen of Bitchiness.
She smiled at the two of us, her fake teeth looking oddly like vampire fangs. “Hello you two! Are you done packing yet or what?” She asked in a sickly sweet voice, one that she knew annoyed the hell out of me.
“Are you a vampire?” I asked randomly. Marcie hated it when I changed the subject.
She scowled. “Of course I’m not Anna. Are you done with your unpacking or what?”
I shook my head. “Nope. I still have to paint my room black too. Hmm… got any black paint Marcie?” I asked her sweetly sarcastically.
Her scowl deepened. “Annabeth Oake, you may not paint your room black.” She said to me.
“Your not my mother. I don’t have to listen to you.” I said back.
“Okay then!” Kaylie interrupted. “Anyways, Marcie, Anna was kidding, she would never do something like that, would you Anna?” She stomped on my foot, a clear sign that I had to say yes or suffer the consequences of my fathers rath later.
“Yeah Marcie, I would never, ever, completely and positively EVER do something that you wouldn’t like.” I smiled innocently at her.
She stared at me for a few moment, determining whether or not I was lying, and she walked out the door without another word.
“Wow.” I said to Kaylie. “Stuck up snob or what?”
“Oh no Anna, Marcie isn’t a stuck up snob at all, shes the most wonderful stepmother a 16 year old girl could ever have!” She said sarcastically.
“Well, you should go make her happy and get to unpacking your room. She has a schedule you know.” I rolled my eyes. “Thank god shes not acting like the Queen in Snow White just yet. Hopefully she targets you as Snow White and not me dear sister.”
“Oh, yeah, nice sisterly love Annabeth Caoimhe. Anyways, yeah, I’m gonna go unpack my stuff. And you have much decorating to do.” She looked around at the bare walls of my bedroom. “You have the tower for a bedroom, and I get one of the normal, remodeled rooms.”
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, my room was the tower of our house. Isn’t that cool? “Dad wants me to be happy with the arrangements of his marriage to Queen b***h.” I rolled my eyes again. “As we all know, I’m the hardest to calm down after I’ve been pissed off, especially when dad surprises us with a marriage we never even knew about, nor had we eve rknown that he had a girlfriend, so therefore he just wants me to be happy. But that’s never going to happen because I will always hate him for what he did. Especially since he should have went to jail for what he did to mom.” I ranted. “Mudering your own wife is not very nice you know.” Yes, my father, Harold Oake, had killed Deirdre Oake, and his son Cayden. But he got away with the murder only because he needed to take care of his other two children, Kaytlinn and Annabeth Oake. Plus, as a lawyer, he was pretty persuasive.
Kaylie sighed, a tear showing up in her blue eyes. “Dad is guilty of them being gone, but there’s no evidence that he actually killed them Annie. All he did was knock them out. And he was drunk.”
“Oh, so now your defending him? Well you shouldn’t, and I think you should leave now, before Marcie comes back.” I nearly yelled at her. I didn’t want to hear her bullshit about how he was probably innocent, and why the hell would he ever kill his own family. I knew him inside and out, and Harold himself didn’t know it. I knew what his relationship with mom and Cayden were like. He hated their guts, so he would jump at the chance of being able to kill them and get away with it.
Kaylie sighed again, a little more sad and depressed as usual, and walked out the door without another word, slamming it behind her. I loved my sister, I really, really did, but her faith in people would get her killed one day. Just like Cayden and mom.
I got out a box full of pictures, and a whole bunch of tacks, and began decorating the bare and empty walls of my new bedroom. Pictures of Hailey, Max, Alex and I were mostly what they were. There was a picture of my dogs Demon and Angel, who were sadly outside, due to Marcie’s “Allergies”. More like her hatred for my big gentle giants.
As I put up pictures, the colors lighting up like fireworks as the light from the sun hit them, pictures of mom, Cayden, my friends, my dogs, forests, mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and so on, I started singing my favorite song, and pretended that I was sing in front of a live audience.
I spun around and grabbed another picture. “Hey soul sister, Hey that Mr Mr from the radio, stereo, the way you move ain’t fair you know!” I continued singing it, over and over again, until all my pictures were put up. Then, my big gentle giants Angel and Demon came racing into my room, knocking me down on the floor, and started licking my face.
“Aaaaah! Guys, cut it out! Too much love!” I laughed at them, trying to get up. Angel was a white Alaskan Malamute, with a little Great Dane I think, and Demon was her twin, except her was all black with fiery orange eyes. Yes, orange eyes. That’s why I named him Demon. I named Angel, Angel, because Angel and Demon were yin and yang twins in my eyes. There names had to opposite of each others.
Angel and Demon got off of me, and barked happily. I laughed quietly and put a finger to my lips. “Shhh! Marcie will flip if she finds you up here.”
Angel laid down and covered her muzzle with one paw, facing Demon, a clear sign that Demon should be quiet as well. I saw Demon roll his fiery eyes and he grinned, a toothy, doggie type grin. I loved my gentle giants. I wish everyone else did too.
I went to another one of my boxes, and got out two huge dog beds, a blue one for Angel, and a black one for Demon. I laid them on the ground near the side of my bed, and pointed to them. “Here, relax and let me finish my room troublemakers.” I smiled at them.
They did as they were told, and I continued with the decorating of my room. I moved my bookshelves around, my desk, put up more pictures, this time pictures that Alex drew, some of them pictures of me. (he was my boyfriend, before I moved out of Washington that is. We broke up, ‘cause were not so good with long-distance relationships and all. Unfortunately, I’m still crazy about him) Then I started putting the books on the bookshelves. Endless amount of books, All in trash bags because they were too heavy to go in boxes, most of them fantasy books, a little bit of them fairy-tales, and like at least two were actually from my old school, textbooks that I never gave back to the school. I couldn’t reach the top shelf, so Angel got up and pushed a chair over to me, and laid back down on her bed. I smiled at Angel gratefully. “Thanks Angel.” I stepped on the chair, and put the rest of my books on the shelf.
Now that I was done with my books, it was time to move over to my desk. I put my laptop on it, and shoved random notebooks and pencils and other random things into the drawers. I wasn’t very tidy.
I was done with that, so I moved to the dresser, putting away my clothes, and most of the time not exactly folding them. I just wanted to be done with this now. I did the fun part, and I hated the boring part of being in a new room.
For some entertainment, I turned on the radio, and my favorite song came up. “Oh yeah!” I yelled and laughed. Angel jumped up and barked her agreement. We girls loved Soul Sister. “Come on Angel, sing with me!”
“Hey sould sister, hey the Mr. Mr. on the radio, stereo, the way you move ain’t fair you know!” I started, and Angel started howling as best as she could without being to loud. “Hey soul sister, I don’t wanna miss a thing you doooo, tonight!”
My door slammed open again, and there was Marcie, in all her glory, fuming at me. “Why are those demon-possessed mutts doing in my house?!” She asked my furiously.
“Well, tehnically, this isn’t your house, since dad gave me the top floor to myself Marcie. Its my apartment, technically, and dad is the landowner. He said that Angel and Demon could go where they please, and you cant do a damn thing about it.” I said to her, kissing the top of Angels head. “So, since its my bedroom, I am asking you politely to exit in a polite manner, before the “demon-possessed mutts” decide they want a snack.” I said to her in a snotty tone.
I heard more steps coming up the stairs, and there was Harold Oake, bald and in his bathrobe, sighing at Marcie. “Honey, it is her room, and I did allow the dogs to go where they pleased. I’m sorry sweetheart, but that’s the way things work in this family. Angel and Demon are family to Anna, therefore their family to the rest of us. Family do not get to sleep outside in any kind of weather, even if its warm or not.”
I did a little victory cry inside my head. Today, my dad was being quite the awesome person. Although that was probably because I was still angry at him for marrying Marcie. “Thank you father. Now, I would like to finish my room, so please leave me be.”
Marcie glared furiously at me, and stalked out the door, with dad in tow. I was glad to be rid of the both of them. I finished up with my bedroom, and I sat on my newly made bed. “Hmmm Angel, Demon, what book shall we read today?” I asked the two of them.
Angel and Demon seemed to be consulting for a few moments, and Demon barked and gently grabbed an old, old, fairy-tale book that had been passed down from generation to generation of storytellers from my mothers side of the family. She gave it to me before she died.
I smiled. “Little Red Riding Hood?” I asked them. Little Red Riding Hood was there favorite. They both nodded.
I opened up the page to the story Little Red Riding Hood, and began. “Once upon a time, there was a little girl…” Time flew by as I read the story to them, and before I knew it, I was saying, “And they all lived happily ever after.”
I looked down at Angel and Demon, and they were fast asleep. I looked at my clock, and it said 6:30. Why was the house so quiet? It shouldn’t have been quiet. Marcie should have been making dinner, there should be lots of noise. I jumped off my bed and opened the door. There was the noise, and the smell of disgusting Lentil soup wafted toward my nose. I shut the door, and the smell was gone, the noise was gone. I screamed a terrying scream. No one came up. No one opened the door. I opened the door and yelled down the stairs, “Did you hear me scream?”
“No! Did you scream??” I heard Kaylies voice drift up to the door.
“No, sorry! When’s dinner ready?” I asked her.
“In half an hour!” Kaylie yelled back.
“Okay!” I shut the door. Whoa. My room kept out the sounds from the rest of the house, and kept the noise from my bedroom from the rest of my house. Whoa. I knew there was something special about this room.
Angel yawned, and got up. She padded over to me and licked my hand. She looked at me with concern, and whined. I probably looked amazed mixed with terror. My cell rang just about then. I looked at the caller ID. It was Hailey. I flipped my cellphone open. “Hey Hailey! What’s up?”
“WOOOOO! GUESS WHAT SISTER?” She yelled into the phone. She was drunk.
“What?” I asked her.
“I JUST KISSED YOUR EX! HE’S A GOOD KISSER YOU KNOW! WOOOOOOOOOO! I’M HIS GIRLFRIEND! WOOOOOOO!” She yelled more.
That hurt, a lot. I was still crazy about Alex, and I still loved him a lot too. And my supposedly best friend made out with him. “Well, why don’t you just go up to his bedroom? I’m sure you would have a fun time up there.” I slammed the phone shut and threw it against the wall. It fell to the floor with a clatter, still intact. Demon jumped up and growled, plain on his furry face and Angels that they knew something was up.
I sighed, a couple tears falling down my cheeks. “Guys… Hailey’s a traitor. If we ever go back to Washington, don’t be nice to her.”
Demon growled menacingly. Angel looked about ready to kill Hailey. There was a question in their eyes, a question only I would understand. “She… she’s dating Alex. She’s a traitor. Ex boyfriends are off limits, remember? Especially if your friend still likes him… And she broke both of them. Shes a traitor.”
Demon growled even more. I sighed and wiped the tears on my cheeks. I would not cry. What just happened wasn’t a crying matter, it wasn’t important enough to cry over. I looked at my clock. I had about 15 minutes left. I walked over to the wall, where all those pictures of Hailey, Max, and Alex were, and I tore them down, and ripped them to shreds. I did it with the rest of the pictures with Hailey in them, and Alex, and I threw them in the trash can. I went downstairs and Angel and Demon followed me.
Kaylie was sitting at the table, listening to her Ipod. Marcie was dishing up the disgusting lentil soup and my dad was helping her. Marcie smiled, her earlier snobbiness gone. “Hey Anna! Want some soup?”
“Ugh. No.” I said to her. I got out the ingredients to make a sandwich, and I saw her glare at me. So, that was her problem. She didn’t like it when she didn’t get her way. Exactly like the Stepmother of Snow White.
I sat down at the table, and ate my sandwich. Then I got back up, put on a jacket, and whistled of Angel and Demon. They came racing down the stairs, nearly knocking over Marcie. “I’m going outside. Be back in a bit.” I walked outside before anyone could protest.
Angel and Demon ran into the forest, and I followed them. I wasn’t like what I think most girls in this town are like. All girly, hating touching animals and bugs and all that other stuff, always wearing high heels and skirts and… ugh, I cant go on. Its sickening just thinking about it. I averted my thoughts away from that, and I followed Angel and Demon into the deep dark depths of the forest.
