Chapter 3
“Myeisha, are you okay?” I hear Abacus’s voice break through to me. I look at him, my mouth open a little in both shock and fear. Abacus raises an eyebrow and walks over to me, repeating the question, a little slower this time. Quickly shutting my mouth, I fake a smile and nod my head.
“Yeah I am totally okay, I just thought I saw one of those freaky things you know from the Twilight Zone Movie…the ones on the plane? I lie and he nods his head gradually, as though he knows I am lying. But then all he does is shrug his shoulders and walk back to where he sat on a chair in front of the TV. After that, I look out the window and shut my eyes, wondering if Anguish is still there, but no voice came. Opening my eyes I then walk quickly out of the cabin to the cockpit. I raise my hand to knock on the door, but then I pull it away. Should I do this? Maybe…just maybe…I can take care of this myself and not have to worry about involving more people…yeah, that’s what I’ll do. Taking my hand away I walk away back towards the bar and sit at one of the chairs. The man behind the bar looks at me and smiles, walking over to me while drying a glass. He stands directly in front of me and I glance up at him.
“Can I get you anything missus?” He asks.
“Um…could I actually have a glass of water with a lot of ice and an aspirin please?” I reply, wanting a way that I could get rid of possible future headaches and fall asleep quicker than lightning. The man nods and then begins doing whatever he has to do to get a glass of water ready and an aspirin. Finally he passes it to me and I take it, right there in front of him. He takes the glass of water away from my hand and after that begins to clean it.
“Can I get anything else for you?” He inquires and I shake my head no, smiling. The man then nods and I get up to walk up the stairs to the beds. The upstairs is still huge, but this time, there are many curtains, each shadowing off a small place with a comfortable looking beds. Somebody must have put it up for a joke or maybe not, on one side of the room is a sign in the shape of a stick figure girl and then on the other side is a sign in the shape of a stick figure boy. Without even bothering to look anymore, I go into the first stall, cover the entrance by pulling the curtain, and then lie on the bed. Sleep overcomes me faster than I can even close my eyes. Nothing comes to disturb my deep sleep, not even the slightest of dreams. I must have slept through an important announcement because the next thing I know, someone is shaking me lightly.
“Myeisha, Myeisha wake-up, we are going to landing soon.” A voice speaks to me, and at first, I resist waking up, but then I do. Opening my eyes, I see my brother standing there with a huge smile on his face.
“How long do we have until we land?” I ask, sitting up and rubbing my eyes, but not too hard so I don’t ruin my make-up. I probably already ruined my hair, but that could be fixed easily, all you do is run fingers through it, make-up is a little bit harder as my bags are in the cargo compartment and I am not about to ask for someone to go get my bag just so I can redo my make-up.
“We are landing like in twenty minutes and boy do you have to see the outside, Japan is absolutely beautiful!” Zaiharan exclaims. Blinking my eyes, I throw my legs over the side of the bed and stand up, stretching at the same time. Zaiharan scoots on out of there as I quickly run my fingers through my hair and after that open the window in my little space. My mouth falls open into an ‘o’ shape as I marvel at the beautiful green countryside of Japan.
“Wow,” I mutter out loud and place my hand on the freezing cold, snowflake covered window. After that, I then walk down the stairs to the first cabin where the only people who really seem to take notice of my arrival are; Martha, Abacus, Hans, and my brother. Martha is the first to come greet me,
“Did you sleep well Myeisha?” I sigh happily and then reply in a funny Japanese accent,
“Yes, I slept a very well, thank you a very much.” Martha laughs and then the Captain’s voice comes over the intercom,
“Well, if you would all now please take your seats. We will be landing sooner than we thought, please fasten your seat belts and prepare for landing.” After the voice disappears, we all follow the command and take our seats, fastening our seat belts right after. My heart seems to rise into my throat as the plane begins its decent, a feeling I really have come to hate, especially on huge drops on roller coasters. The plane bounces a little as the wheels smack down onto the concrete runaway. I grip the chair’s arms tightly as the plane slows down and then I gradually release them. After I pull my hands away, I notice that I left an indenture in the shape of my hands. Martha stifles a laugh when she sees it to and I start laughing, a little embarrassed.
“Guess I really don’t like planes,” I state while shrugging my shoulders. Martha just nods, her face turning red from holding back a laugh. I peer out of the window and after that stare at the airport of Tokyo. The tall buildings stand straight, though I know they are at a slanted angle so they move when earthquakes strike. The plane pulls in front of a gate and after that, Lucy steps into the cabin.
“Alright, we are going to go through customs first, and I have all your passports here, so don’t worry. After that, we are going to get our bags and then we are going to go straight to the parking lot where we have some limos waiting for us.” She informs us and people start chattering softly as we stand up to follow her. I say thank you to the crew who had gathered near the exit to say good-bye. They smile and wave good bye to me and then I step off the plane and onto the air stair.
“Have you been to Tokyo before?” Martha asks me and I shake my head no.
“This is one for the books, isn’t it?” I inquire and she raises an eyebrow in question.
“She means this is one for the scrap book,” Abacus intervenes and my eyes widen in shock, no one had ever understood what that meant. Closing my mouth quickly I then say,
“Yeah, that’s exactly what it means.” Abacus bows his head in a curt nod at me and then turns his attention back to the front. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Zaiharan talking to Hans and my heart warms at the sight. Already he and I had met new friends; maybe this trip isn’t going to be as horrible as I thought. Lucy leads us to the customs place and one by one, we each go through and go through the boring customs procedure. My brother and I go up together and as soon as we got to the desk, the woman behind it scrutinized us through her glasses.
“Are you two siblings?” She asks in a voice that sounds like nails on a chalk board. I had to keep myself from crossing my eyes and making a face as I reply,
“Yes we are madam,” She sneers and then begins the procedure. After that, she stamps our passports really loudly, as if she were taken her anger out on them. Finally she passes them to us and I take them quickly, thinking that she would take them back if I didn’t. Pushing my brother towards the waiting group, I peer over my shoulder at the woman and see her laughing to herself. I raise an eyebrow and then look away quickly before she caught me staring at her.
“Alright, everyone is here so now we can go get our bags. As soon as you get them, please stand next to that column and stay there.” Lucy commands pointing to a column next to the luggage conveyor belt as we walk into the next room. The little group breaks as we go to stand directly next to the belt, waiting patiently for our bags. Mine came first and I swiftly grab it, and after that, walk to the column as ordered. Everyone grabs their bags just as swiftly as me and finally after a swift check by Lucy, man she is paranoid…we walk out of the airport to the parking lot. Just as Lucy had said, 2 limos awaited us in the parking lot.
“Alright…um…just go into one.” Lucy says while helping the chauffeurs put our bags away. I want to help her, but she shoos me away into the car. While Grime, Kendal and Joshua got into one limo, the rest of us including Hans got into the other on. I sit on the seat closest to the door and then I see Abacus sit right next me.
“Mind if I sit here?” He asks and I shake my head no. He then smiles and sits down gently.
“Have you ever been to Japan?” I inquire, turning my whole body to face him. He seems to consider the answer to my question and then replies,
“Yes, when I was twelve years old my parents took me here and we climbed Mount Fuji. We did the sunrise climb and wow…on the top was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. The scenery all around me, from the clouds to the sunrise…this scene could not be done justice by any artists’ paint brush.” I grin, closing my eyes to picture what he saw in my mind. I see Martha grinning widely from ear to ear and I look to see what she’s looking at. After that I realize she’s looking at us. I roll my eyes and then watch as Martha goes back to talking to Zaiharan and Hans. I make a mental note in my mind to talk to Hans so I can get to know him better.
“So why don’t you like planes?” Abacus asks randomly. I glance speedily at him and then begin twiddling my thumbs.
“Well let’s say I have seen way to many movies and shows where the planes crash and no one survives or they are marooned on a strange island where in time everyone dies.” I reply and Abacus laughs velvety which sends chills up my spine.
“That’s cute,” He says and then he makes a funny face, like one an anime character would make when they’ve said something they realized they shouldn’t have. I smile, but then act like I didn’t hear anything to make him feel comfortable again.
“Hmm…did you say something?” I inquire, and he shakes his head speedily, his face head like a chili pepper. I giggle inwardly and then sit backwards on the seat to look out the black tinted windows onto the city of Tokyo. To me, Tokyo looks a lot like New York City, except busier by maybe 100,000 people. Everyone dresses differently; from work outfits to casual to even a few dressed in formal kimonos with the make-up and everything. Right at this exact moment, I really want my camera so I can take some pictures of the unique looking people. After a while of sitting through traffic which so reminded me of American traffic, we come onto the countryside. It makes me remember the grassy scenery of Colorado and pictures of English plains and I become a little homesick. When I get to the mansion, I am so calling my parents.
“Wow, Japan is even more beautiful than I thought it would be…” I hear my brother comment and I turn to look at him. I groan as I see him sticking his head out the window, his hair blowing back like how a long haired dog would and I swear I even saw his tongue sticking out. I walk over to him, hunched over because of the low ceiling and grab his shirt, pulling him back in. The next thing I know, the window to the front seat opens suddenly. The chauffeur turns his head slightly so we could hear him say,
“Here we are, the Hakoga Parvel Mansion.” I spin around to look out my side of the window and gawk, man I do that a lot. This…mansion….was defiantly no ordinary mansion you’d expect.
