There she sat on the roof, watching the sun set. Alexis Miller, age eighteen, looked down at the ruins that had once been the city of Atlanta, Georgia. Two years ago demons had come to Earth, though no one had ever figured out how, or why. Within the first year human population had dropped dramatically. Now there were probably only a couple hundred humans left worldwide. At most.
In the time since then, she had discovered little about the demons. All she was sure of was that there were many different types of them. Although she had only seen one demon before.
"Alexis," A soft voice said behind her. When she turned around she saw it was only her little brother Ryan.
"What is it?" She asked standing up and walking over to him.
"I'm hungry." He whined. She knew he was, she herself was hungry as well. Ever since their parents had died, they had taken refuge in an old abandoned apartment building. With ever-present threat of being attacked by demons, there was little she could do to get food for either of them. And since neither of them had eaten in weeks, she had to go out and get food soon. No use stalling the inevitable.
Swallowing her fear, she said in a quiet, reassuring voice, "Don't worry, I'll go get us some right away."

He listened to the roar of the engine as he drove through the desolated streets of Atlanta at top speed. Alone, and unwelcome wherever he were to go, he had realized a long time ago that the only thing left that he was good at was the hunt. As the sleek black Mustang drove past a toppled building, in a reflection in a window, he caught a glimpse of the side skirts of the car, now covered in blood, mostly dried and old. But some was new, and he was hunting for more.

Alexis' breathing was ragged from fear. She had left a few minutes ago from hers and her brother's little home and kept thinking something was going to jump out and kill her at any moment. The nauseating smell combined by her hunger made her feel lightheaded. She walked hesitantly through the dark streets, illuminated only in part by some street lights that miraculously still worked. She looked around herself over and over, until finally, she let out a deep, shaky breath.
"There's nothing to be afraid of. No one's here," She whispered to herself. She looked over at a house that didn't appear too destroyed, at least outwardly, and wondered if there might be some food in there. As she walked up to it, she accidentally stepped on a branch. The crack seemed incredibly loud after the encasing silence of the night. She froze and waited what seemed like an eternity before beginning to move again. That's when she heard the sound that made her blood run cold.
