She smiled at the young man. He was, what? About twenty? Twenty-two? When was the last time I smiled? she asked herself. She kept smiling, though. The man smiled back at the teenager.
"Hi," he greeted her. She nodded, "Hi."
"My name is Kevin," he introduced himself. As attracted as she was to his blond hair and blue eyes, she had to be suspicious. He was introducing himself on a subway to someone he hasn't seen before. In New York City. He had to be insane or something.
She couldn't help but to reply, though. "Nice to meet you." After an awkward silence, she added, "Call me Jane." She pushed her hair off her shoulder, exposing pale skin that deeply contrasted with her black hair. Then she bit her red lips. Awkward silence.
"So how old are you?" Kevin asked. Geez, he wasn't asking personal questions...
"Thirteen," she answered sarcastically, and then added, "plus six."
"I'm twenty-five," he said, "You are beautiful." She looked away, avoiding eye-contact. She knew what was coming next... "Are you single?" For a second, she was going to give the answer she told everyone: No. But something about him drew her in and invited her to tell the truth.
"Yes," she answered at last, "You thinking what I'm thinking?" He smiled.
"Where are you going?" he asked.
She answered, "I'm heading to my place."
"Do you want to go somewhere more public?" he asked.
She shrugged, "Not really. I don't go to public places except school."
"Should I come with you?"
"I don't see why not."
She opened the door to her small apartment. It was cluttered with books and crumpled papers. There was barely any furniture. A couch. A coffee table. A bed in a separate "room". The living room and kitchen were the same room. Her bed room and bathroom were separate. Kevin didn't need to be invited to sit down. Jane promptly sat next to him.
"So what in the world possessed you to even speak to me?" Kevin asked.
Jane shrugged, not entirely sure herself, "I just felt... attracted to you. Kind of like if you were a vampire or something." She chuckled nervously. She was just that paranoid. Then again, she did just bring a complete stranger into her house...
"And if you found out I was a vampire?" he asked. Her hand twitched. She was starting to sweat. If he was?
"I'd scream and run," she laughed anxiously. He smiled, "Its a good thing I'm not a vampire then." He thought in his head, I'm actually quite the opposite. She relaxed immediately after he said so. His words seemed to reassure her, just like Daniel's words used to...
"So, with a face so gorgeous, I'm surprised you haven't a boyfriend," he commented.
She blurted out, "Yeah well, I always tell people I have one." She immediately realized she had made a mistake and closed her eyes, mentally kicking herself in the head.
"Why?" Kevin asked innocently. Jane fidgeted. "No reason. I just don't want people hitting on me all the time." Kevin looked curiously into her eyes as if the real answer was written in them. Kevin asked bluntly, "Were you ever raped?" She blinked, surprised and shook her head. "Then why," he queried, "are you my charge?" She frowned, "Excuse me?"
"Do you even know what I am?" he wondered aloud. She shook her head. "Can I tell you?" She nodded. "I am," he began to explain, "a fallen angel. I've lost my wings and to regain my position as an angel, I have to guide good people who bad things have happened to. You can say I'm a guardian angel."
"So shouldn't you know what happened to me?" she asked.
"If you were my charge," he said, "then yes. But if you were my charge, you would know what I was already and why you were attracted to me."
"So I'm not your charge. Then why was I... drawn to you and how come this isn't scaring the hell out of me?" she asked. Kevin shook his head, "I don't know." In a sudden bright flash, Jane was knocked to the ground and Kevin disappeared.
"What were you thinking?!" the head of the council shouted, "You told someone who wasn't your charge?!"
"Obviously," Kevin answered in a cool, calm voice, "I wasn't sure if they were my charge. I told her, yes, but I didn't mean to do anything wrong... Could you tell me what happened?"
"You're supposed to tell me!" the councilman shouted, "I haven't any idea-" A woman appeared at his side, putting her hand over his mouth. She whispered, "Councilman, you may go." She was African-American and she had brilliant white teeth.
"Fate," Kevin greeted her.
"Kevin," she said, "I excuse you from this mishap. It is something I cannot fix, but it seems my twin has made a mistake. Well, perhaps it wasn't but after this I cannot promise I will be of any help. I will try. As you know, I cannot tell you anything about this mishap, but I will tell you that everything will turn out fine." Just then, Kevin realized the councilman had completely disappeared. "And?" Kevin asked. She smiled, "That is all." Kevin reappeared on the ground, unconscious right next to Jane. A voice whispered in their heads, "Friendship grows fast to love..."
