Chapter 6
I don’t know how I fell asleep after knowing that horrible news, but somehow I managed to cry myself to sleep.
I woke up to a soft tapping on my arm. “Miss May Mason, you MUST get up. Your poppa’s gone off to work and we don’t have much time!”
I instantly snapped awake and sat up. “Much time for what? What are you planning Georgie?” My voice sounded hoarse and strained.
I was met by his soft smile, “You’ll know soon enough May, but first thing’s first, can you stand?” he offered his hand to help me and I grabbed on, struggling to stand on my ankle.
He slowly let go to make sure I wouldn’t fall, but kept his hands close in front of me. “Do you think you can walk?”
I nodded slowly, “I think.” I took a small step with my bad foot, but when it came to stepping with the other and putting full weight on my bad one I stumbled. Luckily Gerogie was there and caught me. He helped me stand back up, “I’ll be right back.” He said, rushing off to get something. That was Georgie, always rushing around like there was no tomorrow.
He came back quickly, holding two big sticks. He held them out to me, “Here, use them as crutches. I know they won’t be as comfortable as crutches, but they’ll have to do.”
I nodded again as I slid them under my arms, I gripped as low as I could on the smooth wood and took a step, then another, and another.
I looked up, smiling and nodding to Georgie. “So now that that’s established… What exactly is your plan?”
“ARE YOU CRAZY?!” I screamed. Birds flew out of trees squawking at each other because of my outburst, but I hardly noticed.
He shrugged, “What choice do we have?”
We were making our way slowly through the forest because if my crutches, but it was faster then limping. That was when I just wanted to turn back the clock, go back to being “normal,” but what was normal? That was something that constantly nagged at the back of my mind. But THIS suure wasn’t the way to normality… was it?
I felt like crying all over again, how could this be happening to me? Just a few days ago everything was fine, all things A-OK in my eyes. Who was Georgie, a lousy farmhand, to come in and ruin my life?!
I heard barking dead-ahead of us, and instantly I realized where we were heading. I rushed as fast as I could on my crutches; I just wanted to be with my family.
I collapsed into the autumn leaves around me, throwing my arms around my beloved Brooke’s neck, crying softly into her fur.
Why I was crying, I didn’t know. All I knew is that I wished this never happened, I wished that I could just stay here with my family forever. I wished I could finally find a place to be home, that I could be completely honest and open, a place like… like…
Like what? What WAS home? And then it came to me… “Like this…” I whispered. What was not home about this? My beloved wolves around me, licking my hands and face, just overall cherishing me, and I had Georgie, the boy that, even though he brought all this upon me, would never leave me alone. He would always watch out for me. What did I have to lose? A family that didn’t know anything about me, a family that I had to lie to every day?
I looked up and met Georgie’s gaze, “All right.” I whispered, “Let’s go.”
Georgie started off, but I hesitated. Will I really leave the life I’ve always known? I shook my head, I had no choice.
I turned around and faced the wind. I closed my eyes, “I’ll see you again, I promise I’ll come back…”
