Chapter 1: A twist in routine
Eve woke up at the sound of a rooster's crow. She looked over and saw her baby pig Oinkers snoring away on his pillow. She got herself up, and did her daily routine: go to the washroom and take a shower, brush her teeth, then come back and fix her hair. It was Saturday, so she put on her favorite pair of overalls with the blue patch on the left leg. Then she wrapped her favorite blue neckerchief with the purple plaid pattern around her neck. She poked Oinkers, and he woke up and waited for her to lead him out the door.
Eve and Oinkers headed to the kitchen. She grabbed his huge food bowl. Then, she picked up the trash can, picked out some papers, and then poured all the rest into his bowl. She went over to the coffee maker and then pulled out the net with the old coffee grinds and poured it into the bowl. "Okay Oinkers, breakfast is ready!" Oinkers squealed with joy, and started to gobble up his breakfast. Eve headed outside through the back door.
Starting from the back door, two fields stretched down two acres total. The closer field was smaller than the farther one. Eve walked across the smaller field and headed towards the large, forest green barn house. Before she entered the barn, she looked out to the driveway. The grey pickup truck with old burlap sacks in the back was not in the driveway. Eve figured that her parents went to the city to do some selling and then continued towards the barn.
Once inside, Eve looked around at all the animals. She checked them off in her mind: two cows, Penny and Grace, the bull, Bucky, the three sheep, Jack, Jill, and Jane, The two goats, Oatie and Maribelle, her parent's horses, Montana and Wildfire, and finally, her horse, Cloud. Once Eve counted all of the animals, she picked up the fodder and oats next to the door, and fed them. She checked to make sure their water troughs were full. Once everything was in order, she let them out. The horses went out to the larger field, and cows, sheep, and goats went to the smaller one. Bucky, the most stubborn of them all, stayed inside. Once they were out in more space, Eve milked the cows and goat.
After putting the milk buckets inside, she headed to the chicken coup. There, she counted all of them. Seven chickens, Gladys, Ethel, Jessie, Mary, Bella, Paula, and Francine and One rooster, Hector. After feeding and letting them out, she collected the eggs left behind. Eve put them inside. Oinkers, just waking up from a "food coma", followed her out. Eve and Oinkers sat on the stairs. Looking up at the sky, she thought about her life. Every day was the same routine with her. Though she loved the farm, she wanted something spontaneous to happen to her. Suddenly, she heard the roaring engine of the pickup truck.
Eve and Oinkers ran over to the driveway. Her mother's long, straight black hair, identical to Eve's, moved with the breeze as she stepped out of the truck. After her mother was out, and greeting Eve, Her father stepped out, beads of sweat rolling down his caramel skin.
"Hi Eve," her father said, smiling.
"Hey pa!" Eve said waving.
She greeted her mother with a hug.
"Eve," Her mother started, a warm smile forming on her face, "We need to go back to the city again. If you have finished the morning chores, it would be nice for you to come along with us."
"Really ma?" Eve asked, a smile forming on her face.
"Yup. You've only gone a few times, and we were only there to sell those times. So go put on your fancy clothes and we'll head to the city for a day off."
"Ill put the animals inside," Her father said.
Eve ran off into the house, Oinkers lagging to catch up. She ran to her room and looked for her floral dress that stopped about 3 inches above her knees. She put it on, then put in a matching barrette on the end of her ponytail.
"Okay Oinkers, I'm going to town! So you stay here while I'm gone. Okay?"
Oinkers squeaked in understanding, and Eve headed out. Her parents, also wearing their town clothes, waited for her at the truck. Then her father started it up, and they headed down the road to the city....
