- Description: I took this picture on the first day of the 2007 wildfires. I had been driving back from a street fair in Escondido and the freeway was encased in smoke, but this was before I heard the news and I thought it was just a single canyon fire. When I got to my sister's place in Mira Mesa the sky was covered in a dense smog which made it possible to capture this picture of the sun directly.

- the reference image is a satellite image of the area from the same day that the picture was taking. so that you can see the effect the fires had from both the ground (big image) and the sky (ref image).
